Summary of Research:
My research has focused on public administration, Personnel management, housing policy, and sports policy. My published books are National Sports Policies: An International Handbook (Greenwood Press, 1996), Minor League Baseball and Local Economic Development (University of Illinois Press, 1993); and Government and Sports: The Public Policy Issues (Rowman and Allenheld, 1985). Research reports have studied public policies relating to a wide range of community organizations and practices including symphony orchestras, horse racing, and local land use.
Administrative Experience:
I currently serve as the Provost for UMBC (http://www.umbc.edu/provost). Previous positions at UMBC include Chair of the Political Science department (8/91-7/94; 8/97-7/98), Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs (7/94-8/96), and Chair of the Steering Committee for UMBC’s Self-Study for Reaccreditation by Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (2/94-3/96).
Other Professional Activities:
I have made several presentations to committees of the Maryland General Assembly on issues related to higher education and to professional sports in Maryland. I have recently served as an interviewer for the 2001-02 American Council on Education Fellows Program and have been on the accreditation team for several reviews by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. I am presently a member of the Academic Affairs Advisory Council of the University System of Maryland.
