Who decides where an intern is placed?

Dr. Davis, after considering student preferences.

What if a student needs to get a placement by bus?

This is fine if the student knows, from checking in advance (call MTA, 410-539-5000), that the desired placement is readily accessible by bus, on the expected days, at the expected times, from the student's Winter and Spring place of actual residence.

What is the intern's field workload?

In the Winter Session:

In the Winter Session: Some placements require Winter Session work and others do not. Information on placement expectations will be available before students select their preferred assignments.

In the Spring Semester: 15 hours per week for 12 weeks. Students are strongly encouraged to arrange their schedules so that they may spend large blocks of time with their placement 2 or 3 days a week instead of 4 or 5 short days.

What is the intern's academic workload?

In Winter Session: None

In Spring Semester: Tuesday evening classes at UMBC, 5:30 - 8:00 pm, a seminar presentation of research findings; a concise 12-15 page paper completing the research project; and a concise evaluation of completed field work.

The intern learns high-level analysis and writing methods from the academic work, but what does the intern learn from the fieldwork?

Various professional skills, depending upon the placement; legal research and writing, interviewing, negotiation, mediation, advocacy, etc. Also, insight into the administration of justice, and into the relationship of courts to other institutions, to the electorate, and to individuals.

Do interns get jobs at their agencies after successfully completing their fieldwork?

Sometimes, but do not apply expecting a job.

If you applied in a previous year but were not accepted, should you reapply this year?

Yes. Several students have been accepted after re-application, on the strength of improved academic performance.

Must applicants be interviewed?
