UMBC has an environment that allows individuals to move freely around most parts of the campus. This open environment makes it essential that all members of the University community immediately report suspicious activity to the UMBC Police.
Access to the University grounds is generally not controlled. The outside athletic facilities are closed at dark.
Buildings are open during regular business and class hours. UMBC Police lock and unlock exterior entrances in accordance with the building schedule. There is a 24 hour Computer Lab located in the Computer Science/Engineering Building.
Staff, hall directors, resident directors and resident assistants live in each residence hall and apartment complex. They are trained to react to security emergencies, provide assistance to victims and provide educational programs to increase awareness and safety. Also a residential patrol officer is assigned specifically to the residential facilities and grounds, provide additional security to the residential areas. Residence patrol officers patrol daily from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. The front, main entrance to each residence hall is monitored by desk staff, 24 hours-a-day when the university is in session. When entering a residence hall, an individual must show a picture ID to the front desk. All guests of residents must be signed in by their host at the front desk. Residents are encouraged to report the presence of strangers in the hall to the front desk.
