IF YOU ARE THE VICTIM OF A CRIME OR BELIEVE YOU MAY BE...

Call UMBC Police at x55555 as soon as possible. This will initiate a written police report of the incident. You will receive a "Victim Assistance Form" to acquaint you with your rights and resources available to assist you. The incident reported may be a crime, a violation of the Student Conduct Code, or both. You may recommend that University disciplinary charges be placed against a student under the Student Conduct Code in addition to any criminal or civil actions, or UMBC Police may bring University disciplinary charges against a student based on the information you have provided and their investigation.

A police officer will conduct an investigation, which may include taking a statement from you, questioning appropriate persons, collecting evidence, and photographing the scene. Then a police officer will review the incident, the information, and the law, and advise you if a criminal charge is appropriate. Depending on the nature of the crime, you may be advised to fill out an application for statement of charges with a court commissioner, who will decide if a criminal charge is appropriate. UMBC Police may file a statement of charges with a court commissioner. An arrest warrant or criminal summons may be issued by the court commissioner.

The University may impose an emergency restriction from residential or dining facilities, termination of Residential Life or Food Service Contract, or suspension from the University, pending University disciplinary proceedings, when there is a reasonable belief that the continued presence of a student poses a substantial threat to self, to others, or to the stability and continuance of normal University functions. You may request this action when you report the incident.
