The safety and security of the UMBC community is a function of many UMBC offices
including UMBC Police, Student Health Services, Orientation, Counseling Center,
Residential Life, and Student Activities. Throughout the campus and throughout
the year, a variety of educational and preventive programs and services is available
to the UMBC community.
Educational programs on sexual assault, rape, alcohol abuse, drug abuse, and personal safety are part of UMBC's orientation programs.
The University Health Services is open Monday through Friday 8:00a.m. - 5:00 p.m. In the event that University Health Services is closed, there is always a physician available to advise you. The physician on call can be contacted by calling the UMBC Police Department at 410-455-5555.
The Student Health Services staff consists of nurse practitioners, a part-time physician, health educators, and peer health educators who are trained and provide programs to the UMBC community in the areas of sexual assault, rape, alcohol abuse, drug abuse, violence, assertiveness, responsible behavior, and reproductive health are available.
SAFE Line (1-888-UMBC-SAFE) is a toll-free telephone line, created for reporting crimes or unsafe incidents occurring on campus. Calls may be placed anonymously from anywhere in the state. The SAFE Line is answered by a voice-activated answering machine which is checked daily by the UMBC Police Department. A caller may leave a call back name and number if they choose, and an officer will contact the caller confidential. The Residential Life staff includes, Community Directors, Resident Assistants, and Maintenance Assistants. They are trained to react to security emergencies, provide assistance to victims, and provide educational programs to increase awareness and safety. Also, UMBC Patrol Officers, are assigned specifically to the residential facilities and grounds to provide additional security for the residential areas. The front, main entrance to each residence hall is monitored by desk staff, 24 hours a day, when the University is in session. When entering a residence hall, an individual must show a picture ID to the front desk. All guests of residents must be signed in by their host at the front desk.
Greek organizations, Student Activities, Residential Life, the Women's Center, and the Women's Union regularly provide programs for the UMBC community to raise awareness and concern about sexual assault, rape, self-defense, alcohol and other drug abuse, assertiveness, communication, and violence.
The professional staff of the Counseling Center consists of licensed or license-eligible psychologists and a consulting psychiatrists. Staff is available 24 hours-a-day to assist with campus emergencies, and short-term individual and group counseling is also available to students. Students who have concerns with regards to substance abuse or victimization of any sort are encouraged to contact the Counseling Center. In addition, the Counseling Center offers a workshop for students concerned with alcohol or other drug use. "Informed Decisions" is a three-hour workshop designed to help students make informed decisions about their abstinence from or use of alcohol or other substances.

Human Resources provides an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for faculty and staff as well as workshops on sexual harassment.
