The administrative
internship program places selected students with government organizations
at the local, state, and federal levels, as well as with non-profit
organizations. In some cases, government affairs offices in corporations
also serve as placement sites. Recent placements have included Maryland
Department of Budget and Management, Maryland Higher Education Commission,
Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development, local
police departments, mayoral and county executive offices, public
health departments, the U.S. Department of Commerce, INS, and the
Social Security Administration. In their field work, students may
work on specific projects, attend meetings, monitor legislative
hearings, and respond to citizen requests. Class assignments and
field projects require students to further develop their communication
skills. This program also gives students insight into how organizations
are managed, the value of public service careers, and how government
serves the needs of its citizens.
