The department
has a Council of Majors, which organizes forums, lectures, and activities
of interest to students. Last year it had forums about slave reparations,
the MD gubernatorial race, and the middle east. This year it hosted
a forum about the California recall.
Poli Sci Council of Majors also
holds a student-teacher lunch series every year so that students
can get to know their professor on a better level.
Poli Sci Council of Majors also is responsible for the annual
Teacher of the Year Award.
The Pre-Law Society, which has organized law school forums and other
activities, is also active here. Please contact Professor
Davis for more information. A chapter of the Pi Sigma Alpha
Political Science National Honors Society, as well as the College
Republicans, College Democrats, Green Party, and Libertarian Party
are also on campus.The department also sends representatives to
the
Maryland Student Legislature, an
organization that brings students together to write, research and debate issues of local, state, and
national importance.
The department
has a Model United Nations program whose members attend national
conferences. The UMBC
Model United Nations group has earned "Outstanding Delegation"
honors at a Model U.N. Conference, joining Berkeley, Georgetown,
West Point, and Chicago
in receiving this distinction.
Additionally,
the UMBC
Mock Trial Team, which was recently re-activated, placed in
the top ten among almost forty colleges
in the 2003 national tournament held in Kentucky on April. It was also awarded
the Spirit of the American
Mock Trial Association Award for professionalism and fair play
during the 2003 regional tournament held on February.
