Freeman Hrabowski on Creating an Honors University

“UMBC is a research university where undergraduate education matters.

We are giving special attention to attracting high-achieving students and helping them to create a vision of who they will be as they enter careers, from medicine and law to teaching and the arts.

What makes this campus unique, what sets us apart, is that we are focused on the balance between research and teaching. We are thinking constantly about how to help each student to feel special, to develop that special vision of self—’Who do I want to be as I think about becoming a teacher in a challenging school, or a digital artist working in new media, or a neuroscientist studying the complexity of the human brain?’

This is a place where it’s exciting to be learning. Whether one is learning in a classroom, in a lab, or on the stage, there is a theme of excitement about learning—and achieving."
