The techcenter@umbc

1. The techcenter@UMBC, acquired from Lockheed Martin in 1996, is a fully leased enterprise that now houses more than 25 incubator and emerging technology and biotechnology companies.

2. Dan Roche, a successful entrepreneur who launched three multimillion-dollar companies before he turned 40, is the IT Executive-in-Residence at techcenter@UMBC. Jesse Baumgold, who successfully built a company in UMBC’s business incubator program
and sold it to a large biotech company,
is the Biotech Entrepreneur-in-Residence. Both positions are funded by the Baltimore-based law firm Venable LLP.

3. UMBC Training Centers LLC, a University- owned, for-profit training company, offers work force development and certification instruction ranging from industry standard computer credentials, to biotechnology, financial planning, allied health, and professional engineering training.

4. The Alex. Brown Center for Science and Technology Entrepreneurship develops and delivers innovative educational programs and services to stimulate entrepreneurial activity in the region.

5. TechPort (techport.umbc.edu), launched in partnership with the Baltimore-area technology firm e.magination, is an online community that provides easy access to UMBC faculty experts, student talent, employers, and IT leaders in the mid-Atlantic region and beyond.

6. UMBC’s Visionaries in Information Technology speaker series draws regional and national figures known for their contributions to revolutionizing business practices through information technology and innovation.

7. UMBC’s T. Rowe Price Scholars—a select group of students majoring in information systems, computer science, or economics—receive scholarships from T. Rowe Price and have the opportunity for summer internships with the Baltimore -based investment company.

8. The Kauffman Entrepreneurship Program, funded by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, provides undergraduates and graduate students with first-hand learning experiences in the rewards and challenges of entrepreneurship through internships with startup or emerging companies.

9. The Association of University Technology Managers ranks UMBC sixth nationally in the number of inventions disclosed relative to research spending and ninth in the number of patents filed.

10. The Idea Lab, located in techcenter@UMBC, provides fledgling student and faculty entrepreneurs a place to develop or refine their ideas and business plans
and to meet with venture capitalists, technology consultants, and others able to guide them through the process of starting a new business.
