Pre-professional students at UMBC have two advisors:
In addition there are other pre-professional advising offices at UMBC for students interested in Allied Health and Pre-Law.
Assigned Academic/Major Advisor
An assigned advisor is the advisor in a student’s declared major, for example, Biological Sciences, Psychology, Chemistry, English Literature, or Engineering and is typically housed in that major’s academic department. If a student is Undeclared or Undecided, the assigned academic/major advisor is typically housed in the Office for Academic and Preprofessional Advising, located in the Academic Services Building.
All students are required to schedule at least one meeting with their assigned academic/major advisor every semester.
Responsibilities of the Assigned Academic/Major Advisor
- Meets with students every semester, after students take the initiative to schedule such meetings
- Lifts a student’s electronic registration block every semester
- Keeps students on-track with major and graduation requirements
- Guides students on the General Education/GFR requirements
PreMedical, PreDental, PreOptometry, PrePodiatry, PreVeterinary Advisor
Ms. Roelke is UMBC’s PreMedical, PreDental, PreOptometry, PrePodiatry, and PreVeterinary advisor. She meets with students as needed, via scheduled appointments or during weekly walkin meeting hours.
Responsibilities of the PreMedical, PreDental, PreOptometry, PrePodiatry, PreVeterinary Advisor
- Meets with students as needed, after students take the initiative to schedule such meetings
- Keeps students on-track with the professional school prerequisites
- Provides guidance to help students become a competitive applicant for professional school
- Answers questions pertinent to the professional school application process and issues that arise during that process

Mandatory Group Advising Meetings
All PreMedical, PreDental, PreOptometry, PrePodiatry, and PreVeterinary students are required to attend a Mandatory Group Advising meeting every Fall semester. Mandatory Group Advising Meetings are advertised via the Pre-Medical Society, Pre-Dental Society, and Pre-Veterinary Society listservs, in addition to the News section of this website.
Pre-Health Student Listservs
Current UMBC students can get connected to the Pre-Medical Society, Pre-Dental Society, or Pre-Veterinary Society listservs by accessing the Office of Student Life’s Student Organizations List and by contacting one of the officers of the Society that you are interested in joining. Email the student-officer and request that they add you to the listserv. These listservs provide weekly information about workshops, professional school visits, internship postings, walkin advising hours, advising appointment schedules, and much more.
Other Pre-professional Advising Offices at UMBC
Allied Health Advising
Students with or without declared majors who plan to pursue careers in dental hygiene, nursing, pharmacy, physical therapy, physician assistant, and all other allied health fields receive specialized, allied health advising in the Office for Academic and Pre-Professional Advising (OAPA). Students with declared majors who plan to pursue an allied health career receive primary advising in the student’s major department and specialized, allied health advising from OAPA advisors.
