August 21-22, 2009

ABOUT The Summer Success Institute:
The PROMISE Summer Success Institute (SSI) was founded in 2003 intending to bring together new/incoming graduate students and those grad students (both Master's and Ph.D. level) who were continuing in their programs so that they could prepare for and embrace the upcoming academic year of graduate study. This tradition continues! The SSI provides a support system, particularly for graduate students from underrepresented backgrounds (African-American, Latino(a)/Hispanic, Native American, Pacific Islander heritage). The SSI has been called "The Grad School Pep Rally" by students because of the motivational encouragement that is presented by other faculty and staff of color, alumni, and special guests. The goal of the SSI is to empower grad students to succeed, provide secrets of success (including MANY unwritten rules), provide a sense of community, and foster new friendships. We believe that all of the graduate students who are admitted to Maryland's graduate programs deserve to be there. It is our job to make sure that we provide students with the tools to keep them in school, and to assist with skills that will be needed to facilitate graduation and successful careers.

The SSI is a MUST for underrepresented graduate students in Maryland. The SSI provides a "critical mass" of graduate students who let them know that they are not alone and that they can succeed. Broadly, all graduate students, regardless of race, are invited to participate in the activities of PROMISE. We believe strongly in community building and welcome the opportunity to support ALL graduate students in their endeavors.

A Lunch Seminar

This session will discuss opportunities for graduate students to receive teaching experiences. The UMBC/CCBC Teaching Fellows program takes graduate students in all fields who have gone through a number of the "Professors-in-Training: PROF-it" training seminars, and gives them a class to teach, a faculty mentor to help them throughout the semester, and a $2000 stipend. PGCC is considering development of a similar program that will utilize grad students from College Park. PROMISE alum, Dr. Alycia Marshall, began teaching as a grad student and she is now Co-Chair of the Math Department at AACC. In addition to talking about getting teaching experience as a grad student, our guests will discuss Project Kaleidoscope and "Faculty for the 21st Century", an initiative that exposes grad students to all kinds of academic career opportunities, including some at smaller teaching or liberal arts colleges where teaching the students is a primary focus.
This session invites students from ALL disciplines! There are particular needs for grad students to teach early (101, 201 level courses) in the Sciences, Math, Computers, Spanish, and especially English! These are areas where you have excelled since undergrad. By teaching in one of these programs (starting as a grad student!) you can give back to the community, increase the pipeline of students who will be able to get degrees, and be paid for your expertise!

How does one go from being a graduate student to becoming a leader on a campus? Hear background stories from our guests who have worked in various units of campuses, participated in policy making for both state and federal government initiatives, and worked with students as members of faculty and directors of student-centered programs.

Lunch will be served.
