Tips from Faculty, Staff and Students

(Excerpts from Graduate School Orientation Seminars and meetings at UMBC, UMCP, and UMB)

Do
Don't
Use Lifelines: Get to know department staff, fellow graduate students, Dept. chair, graduate school staff Disrespect staff, be a hermit
Be Patient, manage time effectively, select the right advisor. Miss class, forget to back up files, throw away notes, sell books
Plan Ahead, study proactively, keep up with readings, get into study groups. Wait to try to do work at the last minute, leave class without understanding the material, bring undergraduate habits (e.g. level of social activities) into grad school

Research Subjects Needed! Note, some of these positions provide money. Please visit the PROMISE Research Subjects page to find opportunities to post notices about your research or to participate in a paid or volunteer research study.
