Adolescent
Development and Visions of Advancing and Nurturing Child Excellence
Project ADVANCE is an extension of Dr. Cheah’s work with adolescent
parents. We examine socio-cultural, relational, and individual factors
that may influence positive outcomes for both the adolescent parents
and their child by describing and understanding:
(a) adolescents' transition into adulthood and their parenting roles;
(b) their parenting beliefs and observed behaviors; (c) their relationships
and social support networks, (d) the interactive role of child characteristics
and their child's developmental outcomes; and (e) the change and stability
of these associations over 4 time points.
Observations of mother-infant interactions are also conducted. The
participants include adolescent mothers and fathers from Baltimore
City and County. As part of this project, a service component of this
project is also being provided at Paquin Middle/High School. Project
ADVANCE personnel will conduct parenting and fathering focus groups
and classes and developmental assessments of their infants and young
children will be provided
