UMBC CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY TRAINING PROGRAM
ADMISSIONS AND GRADUATION SUMMARY DATA

The HSP program aims to produce future faculty, researchers, and leaders in clinical psychology. Clinical psychology at UMBC is a five or six year program, including a full-time one-year internship. The program includes a combination of coursework, clinical training, and continuous involvement in research. Clinical training experiences include two years of part-time practicum placements in various clinical, research, and human services settings. Usually taken in the student's second and third years, these practica are intended to give students a broader and more integrative experience in the application of the skills and knowledge that they have acquired in the various courses they have taken. Each student placed on practicum is assigned a faculty preceptor who serves as liaison between the HSP program and the practicum agency and meets with students on a regular basis to discuss professional and clinical issues that might arise during the practicum and also help students integrate their clinical experience with current theory and research.

For practicum placements, the department is able to draw upon the rich research and applied clinical training resources found in the BaltimoreWashington corridor, and especially in the greater Baltimore area. Prominent among these are the Walter P. Carter Center, the Gerontology Research Center of the National Institute on Aging, the Kennedy Krieger Institute, the Maryland Psychiatric Research Center, the Laboratory of Psychology and Psychopathology of the National Institute of Mental Health, the University of Maryland Medical System, the Chase-Brexton Clinic, and the Springfield and Spring Grove Hospital Centers. Through the program's collaborative relationship with the Department of Psychiatry and the School of Social Work and Community Planning, students also have access to a variety of courses and training experiences on the campus of the University of Maryland at Baltimore (UMB).

Clinical psychology students are also encouraged to combine their training with another area of focus. Thus, clinical psychology students can specialize in behavioral medicine, community and applied social psychology, or child clinical psychology.

The required one-year full-time internship is undertaken after the student has passed the Qualifying Examination and successfully defended their dissertation proposal. The student receives the Ph.D. degree when both the dissertation and an approved internship are completed.
