Curriculum Information
This summary of Psychology Department policies has been compiled to assist you with fulfilling requirements for the PSYC major or minor. You should contact your Advisor if you have questions or concerns about your academic progress.
Prerequisites
- Prerequisites to all Psychology courses must be completed with a grade of C or better. This includes courses transferred from other institutions.
- PSYC 332 is a pre-requisite for all 400 level PSYC courses.
- Students are required to complete seven credits in PSYC (six if transferring from another institution with a three credit introductory Psychology course or approved PSYC 100 AP credit) in order to take a 300 level PSYC course.
- Many upper-level PSYC courses have specific course prerequisites, as listed in the UMBC catalog.
Progress towards major/minor in Psychology
- Students are not allowed to use courses with the grade of P to fulfill PSYC major requirements (except for the 6 credits of PSYC 397 for B.S. degree).
- PSYC 397, 398, 399 are graded pass/fail.
- PSYC 490, 498, 499 do not count towards the completion of the major requirements for a B.A. degree.
- Students may not register for a course more than 3 times. The university states in the 2006-2008 catalog that “students are considered registered for a course if they are enrolled at the end of the second week of classes.”
Advising
- Students with a primary or secondary major of PSYC must see a PSYC advisor every semester.
- Students with a PSYC minor must meet the PSYC advisor at least once to be sure they are familiar with the PSYC requirements.
- Advisors are available to assist students throughout the semester, not just during pre-registration.
- According to UMBC policy under Academic Requirements and Regulations (page 26 of the 2006-2008 catalogue http://www.umbc.edu/UnderGrad/Catalog), “students are responsible for the management of their academic careers. They are expected to familiarize themselves with the undergraduate catalog and to keep informed of all published degree requirements and deadline dates. Failure to do so does not provide a basis for exceptions to academic requirements or policies.” A listing of undergraduate degree requirements can be found under Academic Requirements and Regulations.
Who is Your Advisor?
