Honors Program

The departmental honors program is open to qualified students who wish to pursue advanced independent research in psychology. Students interested in going to graduate school in psychology are particularly encouraged to become honors candidates because research experience is given considerable weight by admissions committees.

Admission Criteria:

  • 45 college credits with a minimum GPA of 3.0
  • 13 credits in Psychology at UMBC with a minimum GPA of 3.5
  • Completion of PSYC 331 and 332 with a minimum combined GPA of 3.5
  • Students who do not meet these standards may petition the Undergraduate Committee for provisional Honors status.

Program Description:

  • Must successfully complete all the requirements for the B.S. or B.A. degree
  • Must successfully complete 8 credits in upper level Honors courses (see below)

Prior to completing the application and enrolling in PSYC 498H, students must have already identified a potential research issue and obtain approval of a faculty member willing to supervise and sponsor them.  This is typically accomplished by first identifying the faculty member you wish to conduct research with and then enrolling and participating in PSYC 397- Research Experience in Psychology or PSYC 490- Independent Research Project or Independent Reading in Psychology. Under exceptional circumstances, the required enrollment in one of these courses may be waived (for students that may have developed a research project in another course).

PSYC 498H- Honors Thesis Research (4 credits)
All Honors students design and carry out an original research investigation under the supervision of a faculty advisor.  A formal research proposal is required, which must be approved by their Honors Research Committee (faculty advisor plus an additional faculty member).  The proposal will be the primary basis for the grade.  The student should initiate the research project to allow sufficient time for completion the following semester when enrolled in PSYC 499H. Prerequisite: PSYC 397 or 497 and permission of faculty advisor.

PSYC 499H: Honors Thesis (4 credits)
Continuation of PSYC 498H. In addition to submitting the written report (thesis) by the end of the semester, students must present their research in either oral or poster format at an appropriate venue (e.g., UMBC Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day, Psychology Department Colloquium, professional conference). Prerequisite: PSYC 498H
