UMBC Receives National Rankings
Over the past year, UMBC has received national rankings recognizing the University’s excellence, value, and diversity. This past fall, U.S. News & World Report ranked UMBC among the top five “Up and Coming” national universities (along with George Mason, Clemson, Southern California, and Arizona State).  The Princeton Review recently identified UMBC as one of the nation’s “Best Value” colleges and universities and ranked us second on its “Most Diverse Student Population” list.

Faculty
Public Policy Professor Tim Brennan participated in the Department of Energy's Energy Information Administration Conference "A New Climate for Energy," held April 7-8, 2009, at the Washington, DC, Convention Center. Dr. Brennan joined national energy experts, including Secretary of Energy Dr. Steven Chu, to discuss the status of the energy industry and challenges for the future.

The Council on the International Exchange of Scholars has announced that Public Policy Professor George LaNoue has been selected to be a member of the roster for the Fulbright Senior Specialist Program. The Fulbright Scholar Program sends leading U.S. faculty and professionals around the world to teach and do research. The Senior Specialist Program provides short term Fulbright grants to U.S. faculty and professionals. As a member of the roster, Dr. LaNoue will be eligible to make two four-to-six week visits to foreign universities for lectures and research in countries that are part of the Fulbright Program.

Public Policy Professor Cheryl Miller (Public Policy and Associate Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences) received the 2009 UMBC President’s Commission for Women Achievement Award. The award is presented to a member of the UMBC community who has shown outstanding commitment to issues related to diversity and leadership for women.

Students
A book co-authored by Public Policy Ph.D. student Larry DeWitt, Social Security: A Documentary History (CQ Press) has received two awards this year. Choice Magazine, the reference publication of the American Library Association, has named it one of the Outstanding Academic Titles of 2008; and the Association of American Publishers has designated it the Finalist/Honorable Mention winner of the 2008 PROSE awards in the category of Single Volume Reference Work in the Humanities or Social Sciences.

Alumni
The Baltimore Jewish Times featured Pamela Shurkin (MPP, 2008) in an article about her work as a lobbyist for the Baltimore Jewish Council. Prior to taking the BJC position, Pamela spent a year on the staff of then-Del. Bobby Zirkin, now a state senator, followed by four years as the full-time legislative aide to Sen. Paul Pinsky, a Democrat from Prince George’s County.

Publications
A new Policy Brief, Family Separation and the Educational Success of Immigrant Children, by Tim Gindling (Economics) and Sara Poggio (Modern Languages and Linguistics) discusses the challenges that Latin American immigrant children face in the United States, and how schools can help immigrant students adapt and succeed.

Tim Brennan discusses how very large horizontal and vertical cooperatives known as keiretsu affected the Japanese economy in "Conspiracy in Industry or Conspiracy in Academe? A Review of Yoshiro Miwa and J. Mark Ramseyer's The Fable of the Keiretsu: Urban Legends of the Japanese Economy," International Journal of the Economics of Business, vol. 15, no. 2 (2008): 265-78.

Two articles by Public Policy faculty were included in the book, Social Experimentation, Program Evaluation, and Public Policy (Wiley, 2008). They are: “Antidepressants, Suicide and Drug Regulation,” by Dave Marcotte, and ‘The Dissemination and Utilization of Welfare-to-Work Experiments in State Policymaking” by Marvin Mandell and David Greenberg.

Upcoming Events

May 11 - Senator Ben Cardin
UMBC will host Sen. Benjamin L. Cardin (D-Md.) on Monday, May 11, 2009 for a discussion asking "Can We Save the Environment and the Economy?" The discussion, sponsored by the Public Policy Graduate Student Association, will take place at 2 p.m. in the Albin O. Kuhn Library Gallery.
