Purpose: To request permission to enroll in more than 19.5 credits in a Fall/Spring semester, more than 8 credits in a Summer session, or more than 4.5 credits in a Winter session.
Procedure: Complete the form and obtain your advisor's approval. Submit the form to the Office of Academic and Pre-Professional Advising for review.
Processing Time: Five Business Days. If your request is denied or requires further information for review, you will receive an email from the Director of Academic and Pre-Professional Advising or his designee. If your request is approved, you will receive an automatic email from the myUMBC system authorizing you to enroll in your remaining coursework.
Purpose: To request that you receive credit for specific coursework within a selected department at UMBC, without enrolling in the course, by taking and completing appropriate examinations. For more information and specific requirements, please see the UMBC Undergraduate Course Catalog, page 30.
Procedure: Credit-by-exam may be earned for a course by obtaining approval from the head of the department sponsoring the course. A completed credit-by-examination form, signed by the department chairperson and your major advisor, is then forwarded to the Registrar's Office for approval. After payment of a non-refundable fee of $5 per credit, the exam may be administered. Grades then are forwarded to the Office of Registrar.
Processing Time: Five Business Days
Purpose: To allow degree-seeking graduate and undergraduate students to register for courses at other University System of Maryland institutions while paying tuition only to UMBC.
Procedure: Carefully review the Inter-Institutional enrollment guidelines to determine if you are eligible to participate. Complete both the Inter-Institutional and the Verification of Transferability forms. After obtaining your advisor's signature, submit both forms to the Inter-Institutional Enrollment Coordinator in the Registrar's Office .
Processing Time: Processing of your registration at other USM institutions will vary depending on the host institution's procedures.
Purpose: To allow degree-seeking undergraduate students with at least sophomore standing to register for courses at various Baltimore-area institutions while paying tuition only to UMBC (Baltimore Student Exchange Program).
Procedure: Carefully review the BSEP guidelines to determine if you are eligible to participate. Complete both the BSEP and the Verification of Transferability forms. After obtaining your advisor's signature, submit both forms to the BSEP Coordinator in the Registrar's Office .
Processing Time: Processing of your registration at BSEP institutions will vary depending on the host institution's procedures.
Purpose: To request an exception to enrollment policy regarding last day to cancel, drop or withdraw due to extenuating circumstances.
Procedure: Complete the form online, include an explanation of your situation and send supporting documentation to the Office of Enrollment Management.
Processing Time: Complete exception requests are reviewed and finalized within 7-10 days of receipt; incomplete requests are not reviewed. Students are notified by e-mail or postal mail of the outcome of their appeal.
Purpose: An application to register for two classes that are in a direct time conflict with each other
Procedure: The form will need to be completed by the student. Then both teachers of the conflicting classes will need to sign the form giving the student approval. Finally, the student will need to bring the form to the Registrar's Office for processing prior to the end of the Schedule Adjustment period.
Processing Time: 2 business days.
Purpose: Students who are re-admitted or re-instated after a lapse of five calendar years or more may petition to have up to 16 credits of failing grades excluded from the calculation of their cumulative records. Upon approval of the petition the specified courses will be designated as non-applicable (NA) on the transcript. These credits will not be counted toward graduation requirements. Students must file the petition through the Office of the Registrar during the first semester of return to UMBC. Courses approved for exclusion from grade point average calculations may not be changed thereafter, even if the student changes his or her major. Approval of the petition is neither automatic nor guaranteed.
Procedure: The student must fill out the form below and have their advisor sign off approval. After this submit the form to the Registrar's Office.
Processing Time: 3 to 5 Business Days
Purpose: To obtain the benefit of instate tuition.
Procedure: Fill out petition form and attach necessary documentation required by the petition.
Processing Time: 3-4 weeks from the time the petition is submitted.

Purpose: To declare, change, or update the major(s), minor(s) and certificate(s) you are completing at UMBC. This form updates the information on your transcript and your MAP records, and allows you to be assigned to appropriate academic advising resources
Procedure: Complete the form carefully, making sure to select the appropriate major/minor/certificate codes. If one or more of your programs requires departmental approval (these programs are listed on the form), obtain the appropriate signatures before submitting.
Processing Time: Five Business Days
Purpose: For visa, jobs, release from apts, etc
Procedure: Complete the form. Drop the form off at the Registrar’s Office’s drop box or scan a copy of the completed form and submit the document via RT.
Processing Time: 2 - 3 Business Days
Purpose: To request a letter from the University verifying enrollment for the current or upcoming term a student is enrolled for.
Procedure: Complete the form. Drop the form off at the Registrar’s Office with payment. All cash payments must be taken to Student Business Services
Processing Time: 5 - 7 Business Days
Purpose: To request a one time report of records data for an academic purpose
Procedure: Complete the form with all appropriate information and submit it to the Registrar's Office by fax (410/455-1141) 2 weeks in advanced.
Processing Time: Generally 2 weeks from final approval. During peak times please allow requests to be fulfilled within 3-4 weeks.
Purpose: To request a duplicate diploma received for completion a degree at UMBC.
Procedure: Complete the form. Drop the form off at the Registrar’s Office with payment. All cash payments must be taken to Student Business Services
Processing Time: 3 - 5 Weeks
Purpose: For two or more separate courses to join together in the schedule of classes in which the same instructor, meeting pattern, and room are shared. Course material and syllabi as well as academic level (UG, GR) may differ. The form must be completed each term in which the course is combined.
Procedure: Complete the form and submit the document via RT.
Processing Time: 2 - 3 Business Days
Purpose: To have completed transfer courses reviewed for general education credit or for major, minor, or certificate requirements.
Procedure: Complete form and attach a course description from the previous school’s course catalog. You must include a copy of the syllabus for courses in the disciplines of Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Math, and Physics. Forms should be submitted to the Registrar's Office for review.
Processing Time: 3-4 weeks, depending on academic department’s turn-around time. Student is emailed directly once the coursework is reviewed.
Purpose: To verify the transferability of non-UMBC courses to be taken by a UMBC student (prior to enrolling at another institution). A Residency Waiver allows students to take two transfer courses (up to 8 credits) during last 30 credits toward degree completion.
Procedure: Students planning to take courses at a Maryland community college should first check the transferability of courses throughARTSYS.
Complete form and obtain advisor's signature. Return the
completed form to Registrar's Office
for final review.
Student receives a copy for their records. The form must be
submitted at least 3 weeks before the course begins.
Processing Time: 1-2 Weeks.
Purpose: A form completed each semester by students to be certified for VA benefits.
Procedure: Complete the form. Drop the form off at the Registrar’s Office for the VA Certifying Official or scan a copy of the completed form and submit the document via RT.
Processing Time: 3-5 business days (Regsitrar’s Office) and
6-9 weeks for the VA to process once it is received.
Purpose: A document to ensure that students fully understand their responsibility as recipients of VA benefits.
Procedure: Student must initial each line item, sign and date the form. Drop the form off at the Registrar’s Office for the VA Certifying Official or scan a copy of the completed form and submit document via RT.
Processing Time: No processing time; form is kept on file
Purpose: All veteran students making adjustments to their schedule must notify the Registrar’s Office. This information must be reported to the VA and may affect student billing.
Procedure: Complete the form. Drop the form off at the Registrar’s Office for the VA Certifying Official or scan a copy of the completed form and submit the document via RT.
