    Change of Major Modification of Transfer Credit

    Enroll for Excess Credits Form (REG101)

    Purpose: To request permission to enroll in more than 19.5 credits in a Fall/Spring semester, more than 8 credits in a Summer session, or more than 4.5 credits in a Winter session.

    Procedure: Complete the form and obtain your advisor's approval. Submit the form to the Office of Academic and Pre-Professional Advising for review.

    Processing Time:
    Five Business Days. If your request is denied or requires further information for review, you will receive an email from the Director of Academic and Pre-Professional Advising or his designee. If your request is approved, you will receive an automatic email from the myUMBC system authorizing you to enroll in your remaining coursework.

    Request for Credit by Examination (REG102)

    Purpose: To request that you receive credit for specific coursework within a selected department at UMBC, without enrolling in the course, by taking and completing appropriate examinations. For more information and specific requirements, please see the UMBC Undergraduate Course Catalog, page 30.

    Procedure: Credit-by-exam may be earned for a course by obtaining approval from the head of the department sponsoring the
    course. A completed credit-by-examination form, signed by the department chairperson and your major advisor, is then forwarded to the Office of the Registrar for approval. After payment of a non-refundable fee of $5 per credit, the exam may be administered. Grades then are forwarded to the Office of Registrar.

    Processing Time: Five Business Days

    Cancellation and Withdrawal Registration Form (REG103)

    Purpose: To cancel your registration for a semester up to the first day of classes, or to withdraw from all courses for a semester after the first day of classes, but prior to the deadline date for withdrawal.

    Procedure: 1. Students should send an email from their myUMBC email address to records@umbc.edu clearly stating the semester from which they wish to withdraw or cancel.
    2. Or, alternatively, you may complete and submit the form to the Office of the Registrar.

    Processing Time: Five Business Days. Cancellations and withdrawals will be dated from the day they are received by the Office of the Registrar.


    Enrollment Forms

    USM Inter-institutional Enrollment Form (REG105)

    Purpose: To allow degree-seeking graduate and undergraduate students to register for courses at other University System of Maryland institutions while paying tuition only to UMBC.

    Procedure:Carefully review the Inter-Institutional enrollment guidelines to determine if you are eligible to participate. Complete both the Inter-Institutional and the Verification of Transferability forms. After obtaining your advisor's signature, submit both forms to the Inter-Institutional Enrollment Coordinator in the Office of the Registrar.

    Processing Time: Processing of your registration at other USM institutions will vary depending on the host institution's procedures.

    BSEP Inter-institutional Registration Form (REG106)

    Purpose: To allow degree-seeking undergraduate students with at least sophomore standing to register for courses at various Baltimore-area institutions while paying tuition only to UMBC (Baltimore Student Exchange Program).

    Procedure: Carefully review the BSEP guidelines to determine if you are eligible to participate. Complete both the BSEP and the Verification of Transferability forms. After obtaining your advisor's signature, submit both forms to the BSEP Coordinator in the Office of the Registrar.

    Processing Time: Processing of your registration at BSEP institutions will vary depending on the host institution's procedures.

    Enrollment Verification

    Purpose: This information is provided by the National Student Clearinghouse. More information is available at: http://www.umbc.edu/registrar/enroll_ver.html.

    Procedure: Log in to myUMBC and use the Enrollment and Degree Verification link provided under the Academics tab.

    Processing Time: Students can access their information beginning the first day of classes.


    Exception / Appeals Request Forms

    Billing Appeal Form (REG110)

    Purpose: To appeal a billing charge due to extenuating circumstances.

    Procedure: Submit form with a letter explaining your situation and attached documentation to the Billing Appeals Committee, care of the Office of the Registrar. Forms must be returned by the 1st of the month for review at that month’s committee meeting.

    Processing Time: Appeals are reviewed on or about the 15th of each month and students are notified by mail of the outcome of their appeal within 2 weeks of review.


    Update Forms

    Address Change / Phone Update Form (REG111)

    Purpose: To update the personal contact information on file with UMBC, as well as the address that appears on your transcript.
    Note: Change of Address forms should be used only by students who are not currently enrolled and by current students who have an out-of-state address. Current students with a Maryland to Maryland address change should update their address through myUMBC.

    Procedure: Complete the form and submit to the Office of the Registrar.

    Processing Time: Five Business Days

    Personal Update Form (REG112)

    Purpose: To update personal information including name changes and SSN information. (Note: While SSN information is not required in academic records, it is necessary for financial aid eligibility or if you wish to be provided with your student 1098-T form for tax purposes.)

    Procedure: Complete the form and submit to the Office of the Registrar with supporting legal documentation.

    Processing Time: Five Business Days

    Declaration / Change of Major Form (REG113)

    Purpose: To declare, change, or update the major(s), minor(s) and certificate(s) you are completing at UMBC. This form updates the information on your transcript and your MAP records, and allows you to be assigned to appropriate academic advising resources

    Procedure: Complete the form carefully, making sure to select the appropriate major/minor/certificate codes. If one or more of your programs requires departmental approval (these programs are listed on the form), obtain the appropriate signatures before submitting.

    Processing Time: Five Business Days


    Transfer and Transcript Request Forms

    Evaluation of Transfer Credit/ Course Description Review (REG114)

    Purpose: To have completed transfer courses reviewed for general education credit or for major, minor, or certificate requirements.

    Procedure: Complete form and attach a course description from the previous school’s course catalog. You must include a copy of the syllabus for courses in the disciplines of Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Math, and Physics. Forms should be submitted to the Office of the Registrar for review.

    Processing Time: 3-4 weeks, depending on academic department’s turn-around time. Student is emailed directly once the coursework is reviewed.

    Verification of Transferability and Residency Waiver (REG115)

    Purpose: To verify the transferability of non-UMBC courses to be taken by a UMBC student (prior to enrolling at another institution). A Residency Waiver allows students to take two transfer courses (up to 8 credits) during last 30 credits toward degree completion.

    Procedure: Students planning to take courses at a Maryland community college should first check the transferability of courses through ARTSYS.

    Complete form and obtain advisor's signature. Return the completed form to Office of the Registrar for final review. Student receives a copy for their records. The form must be submitted at least 3 weeks before the course begins.

    Processing Time: 1-2 Weeks.


    Modification of Transfer Credit (REG116)

    Purpose: To modify transfer credits once student has reached maximum number of acceptable transfer credits by UMBC (60 semester hours at community colleges, 90 from all institutions).

    Procedure: Complete form and obtain advisor‘s signature. Submit to Office of the Registrar. Student receives a copy for their records.

    Processing Time: 1-2 weeks. (Modification will not be applied until after successful completion of courses outlined.)


    TRANSCRIPT REQUEST (REG117)

    Purpose: To request that a copy of your official transcript be sent via mail to yourself or to a third party. More information available here:

    Procedure: Complete and submit form to the Office of the Registrar. Current UMBC students should submit transcript requests through myUMBC.

    Processing Time: Five Business Days
