Overview
The Office of the Registrar manages registration
processes for regular semesters as well as Summer and
Winter sessions in accordance with university policies
and procedures.
With the exception of some special
populations and programs which may require additional
registration support, students register for UMBC courses
on-line via the myUMBC web portal. Registration authorizations
and course permissions are issued on-line by the appropriate
UMBC faculty and staff.
As a general rule, students are responsible
for the management of their registration, following
appropriate procedures and deadlines to enroll in classes
and/or terminating their enrollment in classes or semesters
in which they have enrolled.
Registration Policies and Procedures
and Term calendars can be found at: http://www.umbc.edu/AboutUMBC/Schedule/.
About myUMBC
MyUMBC is a web-based portal to various
services and online community resources at UMBC. Through
myUMBC, students can access a number of business services
electronically such as billing and financial information,
including account balances and online bill payment,
and transportation and parking services including vehicle
and parking permit registration. Students may also access
and manage various communication tools through their
myUMBC account such as campus announcements, email accounts,
listserves and Blackboard an e-learning community.
In addition, myUMBC provides access to academic services
such as course registration, student’s class schedules
(current and prior), and official transcript requests.
Admitted students are required to
create a myUMBC account for registration purposes. All
registration activity with the exception of semester
withdrawals is conducted online via myUMBC. In addition
students are responsible for checking and managing their
myUMBC email accounts. MyUMBC email accounts are the
primary method through which the University communicates
important academic and campus-related information.
Creating
your myUMBC Account
Once an account is created, students can access registration,
academic records and a variety of other services through
myUMBC.

Eligibility to Register
In order to register, students must
have been admitted to UMBC and that admission must be
valid for the registration term.
Previously admitted undergraduate students who have
not been enrolled for more than two regular semesters
must apply for readmission through the Office
of Undergraduate Admissions.
Degree seeking graduate students must be continuously
enrolled for each regular semester from their first
semester until completion of their program.
Non degree-seeking graduate students (Special Advanced
Students) may enroll in any term for a period of five
years.
Student’s registration eligibility dates are determined
by their enrollment status (degree v non-degree and
number of earned credits toward degree). See Registration
Policies and Procedures and Term calendars for more
detail.
Academic
Eligibility
Students who have been academically suspended or dismissed
at the conclusion of a term for failure to meet standards
may have their registration for subsequent terms cancelled
and may be blocked from registering for any future term.
Financial
Eligibility
Students who have outstanding financial obligations
to UMBC will be blocked from registration for any future
term. More information about payment of tuition, fees
and other charges is available at Financial
Services.
Immunization
Eligibility
Students who have failed to provide documentation of
required immunizations will be blocked from registering.
More information about this requirement is available
at University
Health Services.
Judicial
Eligibility
Students may be blocked from registration as the result
of academic misconduct or violations of the code of
student conduct.
Administrative
Eligibility
Students may be blocked from registration as the result
of failure to meet academic standards or failure to
satisfy admissions provisions.
Advising
Authorizations
All degree-seeking undergraduate students are required
to consult an academic advisor prior to their initial
registration in any regular semester.
Undergraduate freshmen are required to consult their
advisor before making any schedule change in their first
semester at UMBC. At the conclusion of the advising
session, the advisor will issue the advising authorization
electronically.
Obtaining Registration Permissions
Course Permissions
Students must obtain permission to enroll for any course
denoted by the (PermReq) flag in the Schedule of Classes.
Students should contact the department sponsoring the
course or follow the instructions given on the course
listing in the schedule.
Permission to Enroll in a
Closed Course
Courses are considered closed once their enrollment
capacity has been reached. In some cases, hold lists
are available for closed courses. Students can add themselves
to hold lists through myUMBC. If space and other factors
allow, instructors may opt to allow students to enroll
in closed courses by granting electronic permission
through myUMBC. Students who receive closed course permissions
must register for the course by published deadlines
for that semester. Hold lists and closed course permissions
do not automatically register students in the course.
Permission to enroll for courses
with a time conflict
In instances where there is not more than a 10 minute
overlap between the meeting times of two classes, students
may request permission to enroll from one of the course
instructors if appropriate arrangements can be made.
Permission must be granted in writing and provided to
the Office of the Registrar.
Permission to enroll for excess
credits
Students may enroll in up to 19.5 credits in fall or
spring semesters, up to 16 credits in summer sessions,
and up to 4.5 credits in winter sessions. Students seeking
to exceed these credit maximums must seek approval through
their academic advisor and the Office of the Registrar.
A “Request to Enroll in Excess Credits”
form is available in the Office of the Registrar.
Note that in all cases, registration
clearances or course permissions do not constitute enrolling
in courses. Unless otherwise noted, students must enroll
in courses via myUMBC according to established deadlines
for the term.

for which a student is enrolled prior to the first day
of classes) and withdrawals (dropping all courses for
which a student is enrolled after the first day of classes)
cannot be completed via myUMBC. Students wishing to
cancel or withdraw registration for a semester should
complete the appropriate forms at the Office of the Registrar.
Active Duty Military
Active duty military who are deployed
or reassigned may cancel their registration at any time
in the semester for a full adjustment of tuition. Military
personnel (or appropriate designee) should include a
