Sample Course Entry
Key to Schedule Listings
I. Course Information
- Course Number- This number identifies course as listed in the UMBC Catalog.
- Course Title- Course content is briefly indicated here. For further course content information, see appropriate UMBC or UMGSB catalog.
- Course Note- Grade method information may be followed with special information regarding the course. These notes include:
- Cross-listing- Some courses may be listed under more than one course acronym. For example, AMST310 may also be listed as WMST310. If in doubt as to which acronym to register for, students should consult with their advisors.
- Honors Course Restrictions- Students must obtain permission to register through the Honors College.
- Miscellaneous- Other information – special permission arrangements, cross-listed course information, etc.
- Credit Value- This number indicates the number of credits the student will earn upon successfully completing the course. Where variable credit ranges (i.e. 1-4 credits) appear, the student will be required to obtain approval for a specific credit level from the department sponsoring the course.
- Permission Flag- The “(PermReq)” notation indicates the student is required to obtain written permission, from the sponsoring department unless otherwise noted, to enroll for any section of the course.
- Grade Method- Students may enroll for those grading options which appear in the course listing- possible options include:
- Regular (REG)- Students will receive a standard letter grade (A, B, C, D, F)
- Pass/Fail (P/F)- Student will either receive a grade of P (and credits) or F (no credits earned).
- Audit (AU)- Students will not earn credits. Course will appear with the AU notation on student’s transcript unless instructor indicated notation is not appropriate.

II. Section Information
- Schedule Number- This number will be used to register for a class. Each section of the course will be assigned a distinct 4 digit number.
- Section Number- A department may offer one or more section of each course listed. Where multiple sections are offered, the course content will be the same and only the course meeting times (and, in some cases, the instructor) may be different. The section number identifies a specific set of class meetings, class site(s), and instructor(s).
- Class Meeting Times- These notations show the times at which the class will meet each week during the semester. Students should be prepared to attend all scheduled class meetings. Where no times appear, or “Arranged” appears, students should seek clarification from the department.
- Classroom- These notations indicated the room(s) which the class meetings will take place. Abbreviations used include:
- ACIV- Academic IV Building
- AD- Administration Building
- BIOL- Biological Sciences Building
- ENGR- Engineering Building
- FA- Fine Arts Building
- TE- Information Tech Building
- LH1- Lecture Hall (Between BS & Commons)
- LH2- Lecture Hall (Chemistry/ Physics)
- LH3- Lecture Hall ( Admin Building)
- LH4- Lecture Hall (ACIV)
- LH5- Lecture Hall (Engineering/ Comp Science)
- LH6- Lecture Hall ( Physics Building)
- LH7- Lecture Hall (Information Tech Bldg)
- LH8- Lecture Hall (Information Tech Bldg)
- LH9- Lecture Hall (Public Policy)
- LIB - Library
- MP- Math/Psychology Building
- MEYR- Meyerhoff Chemistry Building
- PHYS- Physics Building
- PUP- Public Policy Building
- SOND- Sondheim Building
- THTR- Theatre
- TRC- Technology Research Center
- Instructor- This entry specifies the faculty member who is scheduled to teach the class. “Staff” listings indicate that the specific instructor has not been identified at the time this schedule was published.
