is recommended that you take some time when first starting
the program to develop a personalized academic plan.
The program coordinator serves as a program advisor
and the initial point of contact for all master’s
and certificate students. The coordinator can process
your course permission requests, provide guidance on
course selections and answer other program related questions.
The coordinator can be reached at 410-455-8670 or by

Special Programs
Study Abroad
Because the world is becoming increasingly interdependent
economically, socially and culturally, UMBC encourages
students to include a summer, winter, semester or academic-year
study-abroad experience as an integral part of their
university education. UMBC students have a range of
options for studying abroad through the Office of International
Education Service’s Student
Abroad Office.
Advising
Students are strongly encouraged to work with the Study
Abroad Coordinator in the Office of International Education
Services when planning their study program. The Coordinator
offers students guidance on safety and health issues
to keep in mind while planning a stay in another country.
Registration
Students participating in a UMBC sanctioned study abroad
program must register for a Study Abroad registration
placeholder.
To learn more about study abroad opportunities
at UMBC, contact the Office of International Education
Services’ Study Abroad Office, located in 222
Administration Building, or by phone at 410-455-2624.
Inter-institutional Enrollment
Inter-institutional enrollment is a program that allows
qualifying students at University System of Maryland
(USM) institutions to take selected courses at other
USM campuses while only paying tuition at their home
school. Through the program, students register for courses
at both their home and host institutions, but are billed
only by their home school. At the end of the semester,
the student's credits and grades from the host institution
are transferred to their home institution. This differs
from standard transfer coursework in that both credits
and grades transfer.
Advising
Students must complete an Inter-institutional
Enrollment form indicating the courses they wish
to take at another institution. Graduate students must
obtain approval from their graduate school program director
to participate in Inter-institutional enrollment. Likewise,
undergraduates must have approval from their faculty
advisor to participate. Signed forms are submitted to
the Inter-institutional Coordinator in the Office of the Registrar
for review and final approval.
Registration
Upon final approval (see above), UMBC native students
participating in Inter-institutional enrollment will
be enrolled in "dummy courses" at UMBC to
reflect the number of credits you wish to take at the
host institution. This is for billing and enrollment
status purposes only, and does NOT guarantee course
availability at the other institution.
For more information regarding the
application and registration procedures for Inter-institutional
enrollment click
here or contact the UMBC Inter-institutional Coordinator
at 410-455-2500 or visit the Office of the Registrar
located in the Academic Service Building.
Baltimore Student Exchange
Program (BSEP)
BSEP is a program that allows qualifying undergraduate
students at Baltimore-area institutions to take selected
courses at other participating campuses while only paying
tuition at their home school. Through the program, students
register for courses at both their home and host institutions,
but are billed only by their home school. At the end
of the semester, the student's credits and grades from
the host institution are transferred to their home institution.
This differs from standard transfer coursework in that
both credits and grades transfer.
Institutions participating in the BSEP include:
BALTIMORE HEBREW UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF NOTRE DAME OF MD
COPPIN STATE UNIVERSITY
GOUCHER COLLEGE
JOHNS HOPKINS UNIV
LOYOLA COLLEGE
MD INSTITUTE COLLEGE OF ART
MORGAN STATE UNIVERSITY
PEABODY INSTITUTE
TOWSON STATE UNIVERSITY
Advising
Students must complete a BSEP
form and obtain faculty advisor’s approval
before enrolling in the BSEP. Completed and signed forms
must be submitted to the BSEP Coordinator in the Office of the Registrar
for review and approval.
Registration
Upon final approval, the BSEP coordinator will enroll
you in "dummy courses" at UMBC to reflect
the number of credits you wish to take at the host institution.
This is for billing and enrollment status purposes only,
and does NOT guarantee course availability at the other
institution. The BSEP program is available in the Fall
and Spring Semesters only. It does not apply to Summer
or Winter Session courses.
For more information regarding the
BSEP application and registration procedures click
here or contact the UMBC program coordinator at
410-455-2500 or visit the Office of the Registrar
