Animal Care and Use Training
All investigators and key personnel who participate in the design and/or the conduct of animal use research must be appropriately trained in the care and humane use of animal subjects. The University uses the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) web-based courses to satisfy this requirement for UMBC researchers.
Open the below slideshows to obtain more information on how to register with CITI to take this course:

Working with the IACUC: the basic course required for investigators and research staff who plan to use laboratory animals or plan to supervise such work at UMBC. Investigators and research staff are also required to choose appropriate species-specific module.
Essentials for IACUC Members: This module is designed for new IACUC or current IACUC members. When selecting modules on the CITI, only check the box that is applicable to you and your research. Only check the “Essentials for IACUC Members” box if you are currently a member of the UMBC IACUC.

Once the training module is completed, you may print a copy of your training certificates by logging into CITI (www.citiprogram.org), using your username and password, and clicking the "Print" link under the Completion Reports column in My Courses.
Additional Training Opportunities
Federal regulations state that it is the responsibility of UMBC to ensure that people caring for or using laboratory animals are qualified to do so in a humane and scientifically acceptable manner. Continuing education activities relevant to program responsibilities are expected, with both formal and on-the-job training to ensure effective implementation.
Further training programs are available here at UMBC as well as from Veterinary Resources at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, Program of Comparative Medicine, for faculty and animal care technicians, as well as undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral students who work with animals. A list of current examples of training is shown below.
