Research & Scholarship at UMBC

Welcome Message

Commitment to research, scholarship, and creative activity at all levels - undergraduate, graduate and faculty - is a core component of UMBC's mission. The intensity of this support is deep in the arts, engineering, humanities, information technology, natural and mathematical sciences, and social sciences. It crosses colleges, departments, and disciplines and is reflected across campus in student services, fund raising and infrastructure.

We have notable research strengths in many areas including: the life sciences, environmental studies -- especially through our many university-wide centers, historical and aging studies, quantum optics and photonics, performing and visual arts, astrophysics, public policy and engineering.

We hope this site will be a frequent destination for potential students, our corporate and governmental partners, the campus community and the public at large. As our nation and the international community face environmental, technological, political, economic and social challenges, UMBC's core values of diversity, excellence and innovation will propel us forward to meet these challenges.

We thank you for learning more about UMBC research, and invite you to return often to join us on this exciting journey.

Geoff Summers,
Vice President for Research
