WHAT'S NEW IN 2012?
We're excited to announce the continuing renovation of Hillside and Terrace Apartments! Construction will continue in 2012-2013. Residents should anticipate continued noise, activity and limited pathway access as our construction projects continue. Students living closest to the construction currently will have priority to choose newly renovated apartment spaces that will be available beginning Fall 2012. These students will be contacted by our office directly. The Discovery Scholars Living-Learning community will be moving to the Patapsco Addition 2nd Floor. The Aspiring Teachers Living-Learning community will not continue during the 2012-2013 academic year.
ON-CAMPUS HOUSING
All current residents can select a space on-campus for 2012-2013. You must be in good financial standing, have lived in campus housing for less than 4 years and apply on-line and sign a housing license by March 31st.
5th Year Students (and beyond)
Residential students who are seeking on-campus housing for a 5+ year will have housing in Walker apartments. If you do not want a Walker space please indicate that you are only interested in a Residential Life community on your housing application to be added to the wait list.
All students must sign an on-line license by March 31st to have priority for a space for the 2012-2013 academic year.
This commits you to housing and a meal plan (if applicable) for the entire academic year. If you miss the March 31st deadline you will be added to the wait list and will no longer have priority for a space for the 2012-2013 academic year.
GETTING STARTED!
- Step 1: Complete your housing application and confirm your credits as of winter session 2012 from the RL website.
- Step 2: Select whether you want a Residential Life or Walker Avenue community space (only available if you have at least 39 credits as of winter session 2012) from the RL website.
- If choosing Walker Avenue Apartments, complete the on-line Walker module. You'll receive a housing offer from Walker and can then complete your on-line Walker license by March 31st.
- If choosing to live in a Residential Life community, sign the on-line Residential Life license by March 31st. Plan to participate in on-line or in-person room selection options described in this brochure.
YOUR HOUSING OPTIONS & IMPORTANT DATES
Remember you must complete TWO steps to secure housing for the 2012-2013 academic year:
- You must SUBMIT AN APPLICATION on-line for housing
AND
- You must SUBMIT A LICENSE on-line to agree to the terms of your housing license either with Walker or with Residential Life housing.
Your Housing Deposit
As a current residential student you have a $200 housing deposit on file. This does NOT need to be paid again unless you are moving from Walker Avenue apartments to a Residential Life space. You will be sent instructions if this is applicable to you.
Squat—Keep the Same Room— if you love your room; keep it!
- To keep your same residence hall double room use the Squat module on-line by April 23rd. You must have two people to squat your room. If your double room is not available to squat you may attend the Relocated Students Day from 9-11 a.m. April 26th.
- To request your same apartment at Walker you may only have priority to keep the same space if you fill the entire apartment with current Walker residents. Priority deadline is March 12th.
- Singles in residence halls are not available for squatting.
- Apartments in Hillside, Terrace & West Hill are not available for squatting.
One-Stop Option—Residence Hall Doubles only
Students looking for a low-stress housing option that allows Residential Life to assign you to any residence hall double room based on your application preferences may select the One-Stop option. One-Stop deadline is April 27th. Assignments will be posted in July.
Walker Avenue Apartments (WAA)—different process from Residential Life housing
Once you submit your housing application indicating that you want to live in WAA you’ll then need to complete the Walker Avenue module. This module will allow you to create a group of 1, 2, 3 or 4. You can have priority to keep the same apartment if you can fill the apartment with current WAA residents. Priority deadline is March 12th.
Priority deadline for current WAA residents interested in changing rooms is March 16th. Final deadline to apply for WAA for all residential students (including current WAA residents) is March 28th.
Deadline to complete the on-line portion of your license is March 31st with April 2nd being the final deadline to turn in the signed portion to the Management Office. For more information, go to www.walkeravenueapts.com.
Single Rooms
Single room assignments in residence halls are awarded by credit count. Apply for a single on-line using the Singles module. You may not squat a single room. A singles waiting list will be maintained for students who are not assigned a single room. You will then need to proceed to another Housing Selection option. Deadline to apply for a single is April 6th.
Residential Life Apartments—Hillside, Terrace and West Hill
Once you submit your housing application and license indicating that you want to live in a Residential Life community you'll then need to select the Apartment module. This module will allow you to create a group of 1, 2 or 4. Apartments are awarded by credit average for the group. Groups of 4 will get to choose first for a specific apartment community. Last year there was a credit cut-off for groups of 4 of 45 credits (group averages lower than 45 did NOT get an apartment). This varies from year to year. Deadline to apply for an apartment on-line is April 18th. If you make the credit cut-off you'll be invited to attend the in-person apartment selection day to choose specific communities on April 25th.
Gender-Neutral Housing (GN)
Gender-Neutral housing is an option where you may apply to share an apartment regardless of gender. The GN housing option is available in limited apartments in both Walker and Residential Life Apartments. To apply for GN housing, students must fill out a brief application within the WAA or RL Apartment module.

If you wish to change your meal plan after that date contact the Campus Card office directly using the RT system.

Construction 2012-2013—What does it mean for me?
We are excited to announce that there will be newly-renovated apartments in Hillside for Fall 2012 in Manokin, Sideling, Breton, Deep Creek and Elk! Students most affected by the current construction will be sent instructions on how to obtain priority for the new apartments—students in groups of 4 will receive priority. Students moving into communities: Nanticoke, Gunpowder, Tuckahoe, Chincoteague, Sassafras and Monocacy will need to move in December into Phase 2 - newly renovated communities: Antietam, Wicomico, Patuxent, Pocomoke and Casselman. Moving services will be provided to assist students to transition into renovated spaces on specific announced days. Students will be sent communication throughout the fall semester coordinating the move. During the in-person selection day on April 25th, students who have met the apartment credit cut-off will be able to choose apartment communities. Floor plans of the construction site will be available during that room selection day to assist students to select the kind of apartment space they want for the 2012-2013 year.
