Residential Life

Keys

At check-in, you will sign out your room/apartment key. You agree to accept responsibility for the appropriate use of your key at all times. Your key is given to you for your use only. You may not lend your key to others. See additional information about keys in the Rights and Responsibilities section. You are encouraged to lock your room, bedroom, and apartment doors at all times.

Lock outs

If you get temporarily locked out of your room/apartment, you can sign out a spare key at your community service desk. If you sign out a temporary key, it should be returned within 30 minutes. If a key is not returned by noon the next business day, steps will be taken to initiate a lock change at your expense.

UMBC Campus Card

If you live in Harbor or Erickson Hall your Campus Card is also used to swipe in and out of your building. Campus dollars can be used in residence laundry rooms and in most vending machines. Your campus card is given to you for your use only and cannot be lent to others.

Resident ID Cards

Identification cards are provided to residents as a mechanism of establishing that a student has a legitimate purpose on campus or within a specific community. Your Resident ID Card is uniquely color-coded for your individual residential community in Chesapeake, Susquehanna, Patapsco, Potomac, Erickson, Harbor, Hillside, West Hill and Terrace. See the Rights and Responsibilities section for more information.

Lost Keys or IDs

Because a lost key or ID can endanger the larger community by allowing someone who should not have permission to enter an area to do so, any losses must be reported to your service desk and Community Director immediately. Please take any ID that you find to the Office of Campus Card Administration, located in the University Center, or to your Community Service Desk. Do not keep or use any ID that does not belong to you. If your keys or ID have been stolen, you should contact University Police immediately and file a report. Replacement ID cards are issued by the Office of Campus Card Administration, located in the University Center. The lock will be changed and new keys will be issued to you and your roommate(s)/apartmentmate(s) for your security. Students will be billed for replacing lost keys or ID cards, regardless of the reason the replacement is needed.
