Apartment residents pay for their electricity use. Meters are read at the end of each month. A statement of charges is available for residents to view
on-line from the Residential Life web site monthly, but actual charges are posted to your student account only once at the end of each semester. Please
reference your monthly apartment Utility Statements at www.umbc.edu/reslife/my_housing.html then login to MyUMBC. Average individual resident utility
electric charges will be approximately $100 per month, but can vary widely, depending on outside temperatures, personal comfort levels and thermostat
settings. Charges are based on the monthly rate per kilowatt hour (KWH), and the KWHs used. Depending on the season, BGE adjusts the rates affecting the
cost per KWH.
Each apartment charge is divided by the number of residents to reflect each individual’s portion. If you believe your utility statement or bill is incorrect, you should file a written appeal within ten (10) days of receiving your statement. The appeal should be sent to Residential Facilities. The meter will be re-read to determine if there is a problem. If an error or problem is found, your charges will be reduced to the median utility charge for your community during the month. During January, apartment residents are responsible for an equal share of that month’s utility bill even if you do not stay on campus during the break period. Minimum heat of 50 degrees must be kept on in the apartment to prevent freezing pipes. You are responsible for damage to the building or University property caused by frozen pipes if the heat is not set properly. |
