"Hott" Summer Jobs with Residential Life Would you like a “hott” summer job working for Residential Life this summer? Here is what people are saying about life as a Conference Assistant and Maintenance Assistant Manager from summer 2009: As a Conference Assistant, Sam Byrd sharpened her customer service skills, worked with visiting guests and built strong friendships within the Conference Services staff. Samantha enjoyed sharing her love of UMBC with conference guests, “it was great to be in a position where I can display UMBC is a positive light”. When Samantha was considering summer jobs, she applied for Conference Services because it was convenient, had a good salary, and included housing. In addition to her position, Samantha was able to build relationships with the Residential Life staff which has helped her to transition into her current position as an RA in Erickson Hall. When asked if she was going to join UMBC Conference Services Staff for Summer 2010, she reluctantly said, “I have to complete an internship this summer so I can get into Physical Therapy school”. Fortunately, Samantha’s experiences in Conference Services will offer her transferable skills and she will be an amazing intern for whichever company is lucky enough to have her. Each summer, UMBC Conference Services hires five Maintenance Assistants and one Maintenance Assistant Manager. All Maintenance Assistants work together in the residential buildings throughout the summer conference season. “The great thing is, the MAs build community,” Steve Ross said. “We built a team.” When it came time for Steve to move out he didn’t have to work alone, the MAs all helped pack and repack. It is only logical that the team which helped each other throughout the summer in various maintenance projects, would continue working together as their time together came to a close. Aside from learning the Residential Life maintenance method, Steve said that MAs develop customer service skills and self-management that are important qualities in any job. As the MA manager, Steve worked with minimal supervision, directing and helping the staff complete tasks laid out by supervisors within Residential Life Facilities. Steve’s enhanced summer skills now aid him as he works as an academic year Maintenance Assistant with Residential Life, as the Graduate Assistant Coordinator with the Commons and a continuing Graduate student at UMBC. If you are interested in expanding your skills and need a hot summer job with excellent pay plus housing take a look at the Residential Life website for further position details to be posted shortly!
