"Words Matter: How Language Influences Functions & Care in Aging"
with Dr. Judah Ronch, Dean of The Erickson School
Camille Kendall Academic Center, 3226
Words make worlds. The language people use with older persons
not only communicates information, it conveys messages about how we view
them and our expectations for how they should act. It can even influence
performance on tests of memory and color their experiences. Many of the
common terms heard in aging service environments are meant to be caring but
may instead communicate lowered expectations and ageist stereotypes.
