Jan
L. Arminio received her Bachelor’s degree from Ohio Northern
University and her Master’s degree in College Student Personnel from Bowling
Green State University. After 13 years of student affairs work in higher
education (in the areas of residence life, campus activities, Greek affairs,
multicultural center advising, and judicial affairs) she received her
doctorate in College Student Personnel Program at the University of
Maryland, College Park. Upon receiving her doctorate she served as Associate
Dean of Students at Colby College.
In 1996 Dr. Arminio began teaching in a graduate student affairs program at Shippensburg University. Currently she is professor and chair in the Department of Counseling and College Student Personnel. She also currently serves as President of the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS). She has represented the National Association for Campus Activities (NACA) to CAS since 1987. She has also was appointed to and later chaired the Faculty Fellows of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators and served on the editorial board for the Journal of College Student Development.
Dr. Arminio’s scholarship focuses on a variety of topics including multicultural issues, qualitative research, assessment, and campus programs and leadership. Examples of her recent scholarship include a co-authored book entitled, Negotiating the Complexities of Qualitative Research, and articles including “Breaking out from the shadow: The question of criteria in qualitative research” in the Journal of College Student Development, “Exploring the nature of race-related guilt” in the Multicultural Counseling Journal, “Waking up White: What it Means to Accept your Legacy, for Better and Worse” in About Campus, “The Nature of Leadership Experiences for Students of Color” in the NASPA Journal, “The Complexities of Measuring Multicultural Learning Outcomes” in Pennsylvania Counseling Journal, “The Influence of Students’ Racial Identity on Campus Programming” in Programming Magazine, and “The Impact of Involvement on Students at Various Points of Their College Careers in Involvement in Campus Activities and Retention of First-year Students.
Jan lives in Carlisle, Pennsylvania with her three sons, husband Tom, and two dogs. She enjoys reading mysteries, traveling, eating out, and exercising. In Carlisle she served on the Social Justice Committee of the YWCA and the Anti-Bias Advisory Committee for the Carlisle Public School District.
