Explanation of Mandatory Fees
Undergraduate
One time Mandatory fees:
The non-refundable application fee for undergraduate programs and summer and winter sessions helps defray the cost of processing UMBC admissions. By written request, students may update their applications by one semester or term without paying an additional application fee.
A non-refundable enrollment confirmation deposit is required of all new degree-seeking freshmen and transfer students. This deposit is applied toward tuition and fees.
Enrolling, degree-seeking undergraduate students are charged a one-time, non-refundable orientation fee before their first semester at UMBC.
A non-refundable matriculation fee will be charged to all undergraduate, degree-seeking students, their first semester at UMBC.
Mandatory fees charged each semester:
- Non-refundable Athletic fee supports intercollegiate athletics, intramurals and recreation programs.
- Non-refundable University Commons fee supports services and programs available at The Commons.
- Non-refundable Transportation fee supports the maintenance of parking facilities, shuttle buses and the campus program of traffic control.
- Student Activities fee covers costs of various student activities and student publications administered by the Student Government Association.
- Auxiliary Facilities fee supports the development and maintenance of facilities essential to UMBC's programs.
- The Technology fee supports the computer infrastructure on campus: computer networking, myUMBC portal, site, student labs, wireless systems and the Information Technology Help Desk.
Graduate
- A non-refundable Application fee partially defrays the cost of processing applications for admission and enrollment data. It is not refundable under any circumstances.
- A non-refundable University Commons fee supports services and programs available at The Commons.
- An Auxiliary Facilities fee is charged to students to support, develop and maintain the buildings and facilities essential to UMBC's programs.
- A non-refundable Athletic fee supports inter-collegiate athletics, intramurals, and recreation programs.
- A non-refundable Transportation fee supports the maintenance of parking facilities, shuttle buses and the campus program of traffic control.
- A Graduate Program fee supports the Graduate Student Association, graduate research and travel grants and other services provided to graduate students.
- A Technology fee supports the computer infrastructure on campus: computer networking, myUMBC portal, site, student labs, wireless systems and the Information Technology Help Desk.
- A Matriculation fee (charged only to new students) supports the new student orientation program, Success Seminars, retention and degree completion program, the graduation clearance process and Commencement ceremony. This fee will be split into two even charges between the student's first two semesters at UMBC.
