Why did you choose UMBC at The Universities at Shady Grove?
I chose UMBC at Shady Grove because I knew that I wanted to major in Social Work, but I had to fit my education in with my work and family commitments. Shady Grove was a perfect option because it was an easy commute, very affordable, and I am earning my degree from a prestigious university without having to uproot my life.
What do you like best about UMBC-Shady Grove?
The best thing about Shady Grove is that the entire campus is incredibly student-friendly. Computers, printers, copiers, study rooms, smart classrooms - everything you can imagine is readily available. Meanwhile, from the very beginning, the support staff went above and beyond to let me know that they were available, and I sensed that they were genuinely glad that I was attending USG.
What internships and/or extracurricular activities have you been involved with at UMBC-Shady Grove?
This year at UMBC-Shady Grove I have served as Vice President for the Social Work Student Association, volunteered with Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) through Student Service Learning, went on the “Through the Eyes of a Refugee” simulation with Alternative Spring Break (ASB) at main campus, participated in guided study sessions with the Center for Academic Success, and sang the National Anthem at the Graduation Celebration.
What are your plans after graduation?
After graduation, I would like to serve in the Peace Corps before pursuing my master’s degree, either in Social Work or Public Health.
What advice would you give to a prospective student?
The best advice I can give to a prospective student is to make use of all the resources offered at Shady Grove! There are so many available, and doing something as simple as visiting the Center for Academic Success can vastly improve your work and save you time in the long run. Participating in activities offered by both UMBC and Shady Grove can be incredible learning opportunities, help build your resume, and they’re a lot of fun.
