Allen McConegheyWhy did you choose UMBC at The Universities at Shady Grove?

I decided to come to UMBC @ USG because I rather have small-size classes. They enable me to interact with the instructor, which enriches my learning experience. Many of the instructors here have professional experience in their fields and can offer valuable insight. In addition, USG’s location near Washington, DC is a great asset for a Political Science student.

What do you like best about UMBC-Shady Grove?

The sense of community that exists among students here is great.

What internships and/or extracurricular activities have you been involved with at UMBC-Shady Grove?

I intern at the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START). START is a research center funded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Its mission is to assist government officials with the policymaking process. I am currently working on compiling a database of terrorist incidents from the last few decades. Additionally, I worked on a study that sought to asses the effectiveness of counter-terrorism measures taken by governments from around the world. I am also Vice President of the Political Science Student Association.

What are your plans after graduation?

Before going to graduate school, I want to join the Peace Corps. It will enable me to make a small contribution to the development of another country while I expand my understanding of the vast cultural diversity in our planet.

What advice would you give to a prospective student?

Consider UMBC @ USG as seriously as any other school.
