Rebecca MullanWhy did you choose UMBC at The Universities at Shady Grove?

To be honest I wasn’t really sure what school I was interested in at first, but I look back and think what a wonderful match! I attended an information session (because I was considering Psychology as a field), and I was overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and support that came from the UMBC representatives.  I didn’t think I had enough time to make applying and registration possible for the next semester; but they just jumped in and helped me to get started right away. My love for the school has only grown since then. I really admire our school President, and the institution as a whole. I know I made the right choice.

What do you like best about UMBC-Shady Grove?

Definitely my fellow students and the staff, I have really enjoyed getting to know everyone on such a personal level. I also joke that we are so spoiled at Shady Grove! The facilities, the classroom size, even the cafe- everything is state of the art and yet it has a very comforting “family” feel to it.

What internships and/or extracurricular activities have you been involved with at UMBC-Shady Grove?

This year I have really enjoyed getting to participate in a PSYC 398 internship. I was teaching three elementary classes at two different schools under the Archdiocese of Washington, and helping to lead as a counselor a support program for children from divorced families. This was a great opportunity for me since I hope to continue studying child psychology at the graduate level. I also was treasurer of the Psychological Student Association at USG, helping with a few of our fundraisers and our new PSA t-shirt!

What are your plans after graduation?

I have been accepted and plan on attending John Hopkins University in the fall. I will be enrolled in either their School Counseling program, or their Community Psychology program. I also plan on visiting constantly the people I will miss so greatly at Shady Grove!

What advice would you give to a prospective student?

Don’t be afraid of getting involved. There are just so many amazing opportunities at Shady Grove. Talk to your teachers and the staff because you couldn’t ask for better assistance in making your Shady Grove experience both fulfilling and completely worthwhile.
