Why did you choose UMBC at The Universities at Shady Grove?
I chose UMBC at Shady Grove because I knew that I wanted to major in Social Work, but I had to fit my education in with my work and family commitments. Shady Grove was a perfect option because it was an easy commute, very affordable, and I am earning my degree from a prestigious university without having to uproot my life.

What do you like best about UMBC-Shady Grove?
Definitely my fellow students and the staff, I have really enjoyed getting to know everyone on such a personal level. I also joke that we are so spoiled at Shady Grove! The facilities, the classroom size, even the cafe- everything is state of the art and yet it has a very comforting “family” feel to it.

Why did you choose UMBC at The Universities at Shady Grove?
The Universities at Shady Grove seemed like the perfect option for me because it is located just five minutes from my house and has a reputable social work program. After visiting, I fell in love with the modern, eco-friendly facilities. But what won me over was the opportunity to have small classes and the chance to get to know my professors, the university's staff and classmates more closely than if I were attending a big campus.

What do you like best about UMBC-Shady Grove?
The two things I like best about UMBC-Shady Grove are the professors and my classmates. The professors do a great job teaching concepts from the book as well as sharing real life experiences from the field. Because most of my classmates are in all of my classes, we have become a family at UMBC-Shady Grove.

What advice would you give to a prospective student?
I would tell the student to choose the atmosphere they feel they would learn the best in. It is really nice to have the outstanding majors offered at schools in the University System of Maryland in small class settings at USG. If you are looking for a more focused classroom experience, USG is the place to be. There is definitely more interaction in the classroom and the student body has great connections amongst peers. Often times, you are moving through the same classes with other students, which is great because you make friends and study buddies. If you are looking for a close student body with supportive peers, USG is definitely the place for you.

Why did you choose UMBC at The Universities at Shady Grove?
I decided to come to UMBC @ USG because I rather have small-size classes. They enable me to interact with the instructor, which enriches my learning experience. Many of the instructors here have professional experience in their fields and can offer valuable insight. In addition, USG’s location near Washington, DC is a great asset for a Political Science student. Read More...

What internships and/or extracurricular activities have you been involved with at UMBC-Shady Grove?
I’ve been involved with the UMBC Political Science Association here at the Shady Grove campus, representing students and voicing their opinions in the marketplace of ideas in hopes of making the Political Science program here at Shady Grove even better.
