The Sherman STEM Teacher Education Program harnesses UMBC’s strengths in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and our capabilities in teacher preparation, experiential education and leadership development to increase the number of outstanding STEM students in the teacher-education pipeline. The program aims to have a positive effect on the growing shortage of highly qualified STEM teachers and to cultivate a greater interest in and aptitude for these disciplines among K-12 students. Graduates of the program teach in high-needs schools in the Baltimore region. A generous gift from George and Betsy Sherman, founders of the Sherman Family Foundation, supports the Sherman STEM Teacher Education Program.

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR
The momentum of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education at UMBC is accelerating with the recent unveiling of education concentrations in the physics and math disciplines and enhanced by the introduction of the Sherman Teacher Education Scholars program. We are thrilled to embark upon this journey with our scholars and are confident they will graduate from UMBC as professionals who possess a deep understanding of a specific STEM discipline, the students they will teach, the communities in which they will work and the intricacies of the educational system. Sherman Teacher Education Scholars will be champions in the classroom and leaders in their schools.
