HOW To Apply

All students must submit an application to UMBC admissions and a separate application to the Sherman Program. In order to be awarded a Sherman scholarship, you must be accepted into a STEM or MAT program at UMBC.

Undergraduate student applications can be found on UMBC’s Office of Undergraduate Admissions Web site.

Graduate student applications can be found on UMBC’s Office of Graduate Admissions Web site.

Undergraduate Students
Students are encouraged to apply by the early action admissions deadline of November 1 and must submit their completed scholarship application and supporting materials by January 15.

Students will receive invitations to attend UMBC’s Scholar Selection Weekend by mid-February. Applicants will be interviewed at this event, which is held the first Saturday of March. Final award decisions are made no later than March 31.

The Sherman Scholarship Application seeks an essay and two letters of reference. It is better if these letters of reference come from people who can speak about your strengths in the STEM areas and/or interest in teaching.

The Sherman Program Application can be found either on UMBC’s Office of Undergraduate Admissions Web site, or you can download it in PDF format by clicking here.

*NOTE: on item 9 of the application, Freshman applicants complete the first line only and transfer and UMBC student applicants complete the second line only.
