The Sherman STEM Teacher Education Program harnesses UMBC’s
strengths in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and
our capabilities in teacher preparation, experiential education and leadership
development to increase the number of outstanding STEM students in the teacher-education
pipeline. The program aims to have a positive effect on the growing shortage
of highly qualified STEM teachers and to cultivate a greater interest in
and aptitude for these disciplines among K-12 students. Graduates of the
program teach in high-needs schools in the Baltimore region. A generous
gift from George
and Betsy Sherman,
founders of the Sherman Family Foundation, supports the Sherman STEM Teacher
Education Program.
