UMBC Alumni Medical Fellows Program

The Alumni Medical Fellows Program is a collaborative effort between the UMBC Office of Alumni Relations, The Shriver Center and the Pre-Med Society to introduce interested UMBC students to the unique fields of health and medicine. Throughout the Spring 2005 semester, beginning in March, Medical Fellows will:

• Meet and be mentored by UMBC Alumni currently practicing in the field of medicine. Students will have the opportunity to have substantive meetings that will introduce them to a medical practice and network with practicing professionals;

• Attend seminars to learn about current trends and topics designed to address the rewards and challenges in the field of medicine; and

• Gain valuable exposure to the talents and resources of UMBC alumni while gaining insight into their own career choices.

Qualifications
Eligible applicants must be a current full-time student at the University of Maryland , Baltimore County . Applicants must be in their freshman or sophomore year with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Students interested in pursuing careers in medicine, dentistry and veterinary science are encouraged to apply.

Requirements
Selected students must enroll in a Shriver Center Practicum Course specifically designed for the UMBC Alumni Medical Fellows Program. The practicum course is recognized on the UMBC transcript as a zero-credit pass/fail course.

The Practicum Course includes student meetings with assigned mentors three times per semester, attendance at seminars and completion of a reflective journal. The Program will conclude with a recognition event.

Application Procedure
Interested candidates can download an application or pick one up at the Shriver Center located on the first floor of the Public Policy building. Selected students will be matched with a mentor who is a UMBC Alumnus currently practicing medicine.
