Advising

Once you've declared a Sociology or Anthropology major, you will be assigned an advisor and will receive updates relevant to your major. To declare your major, fill out the major declaration form, located on the Registrar's website, or in the undergraduate office (PUP 252) and return it to the Registrar's office.

You must meet with your advisor each semester during registration to review your progress toward fulfilling major and university requirements. You will not be able to register for classes until you have met with an advisor and he or she has authorized you to register. SOCY or ANTH majors with another primary major are still strongly encouraged to meet each semester with their SOCY or ANTH advisor.

Students' advisor assignments will be posted each semester on the bulletin board next to PUP 256. Please schedule a meeting with your assigned advisor during the advanced registration period, by signing up for an available time slot on their door, or contacting them directly through phone or email. You may also request a meeting with your advisor throughout the semester to discuss your plan, or to ask questions. If you do not know who your advisor is, would like to switch advisors, or have any other questions, please contact Elise Bruner in the departmental office at 410.455.3979 or elise3@umbc.edu.
