Grade Requirement

For a course to receive credit towards the anthropology major or the minor, the student must earn a grade of C or better. Pass-fail grades are not permitted for the major or minor. This rule also applies to all sociology and anthropology courses taken at other colleges that are transferred to UMBC.

Required Courses

Students are strongly encouraged to take all advanced required courses (SOCY 300, ANTH 303, ANTH 400) before their last semester at UMBC. These courses are normally taken at UMBC. Exceptions to this rule can be made if you bring in the syllabus to show your advisor that the courses are equivalent. In this case, the student needs permission from the Coordinator of the Anthropology Major.

Course taken at Other Colleges

Students must take at least 16 credits of Anthropology courses at UMBC to qualify for the major.
Courses taken at other colleges are first examined by the Registrar's office for approval for UMBC credit. Only courses that have been approved for UMBC credit can be considered by your anthropology advisor for credit towards the major. Approval of a sociology or anthropology courses taken elsewhere for UMBC credit by the registrar does not automatically give it credit towards the major or minor in anthropology.
Each student must personally discuss courses taken at other college with his or her anthropology advisor to be sure that the courses will receive credit towards the anthropology major or minor at UMBC. If there is any ambiguity, ask your advisor for a written statement about the courses.
If you plan to take a sociology or anthropology course at another college after you have enrolled at UMBC, discuss it with your advisor to make sure in advance that it will receive credit towards the major. Never take the equivalent of SOCY 300, ANTH 303 or ANTH 400 at another college without your advisor's prior approval.
The department will usually give credit for introductory anthropology classes taken at other colleges as equivalent to ANTH211. Many other sociology and anthropology courses at other colleges will also be given credit towards the major at UMBC. Courses in social service, social work, criminal justice, or religion are not sociology or anthropology courses and will not be given credit.
