Anthropology (Total Credits: 31)
This must include at least 16 ANTH credits taken at UMBC (including ANTH 211). Students must complete all courses with a grade of “C” or better:
1. Core Requirements (13 credits)
ANTH 211 Cultural Anthropology [3]
ANTH 303 Anthropological Research Methods [3]
SOCY 300 Methodology of Social Research [4]
ANTH 400 Anthropological Theory [3]
2. Elective Requirements (18 credits)
Students must also complete eighteen
additional credits of Anthropology or Sociology with a grade of “C” or
better. Twelve of these eighteen credits must be in Anthropology. The
remaining six credits may be in Anthropology or Sociology (thus, a maximum
of six credits may be in Sociology). In addition, a minimum of twelve of
these credits must be 300 level or above. Socy 396 and courses that are
P/F may not be counted toward this requirement.

| Required
Courses |
Students are strongly encouraged to
take all advanced required courses (SOCY 300, ANTH 303,
ANTH 400) before their last semester at UMBC. These courses
are normally taken at UMBC. Exceptions to this rule can
be made if you bring in the syllabus to show your advisor
that the courses are equivalent. In this case, the student
needs permission from the Coordinator of the Anthropology
Major.

| Course
taken at Other Colleges |
Students must take at least 16 credits
of Anthropology courses at UMBC to qualify for the major.
Courses taken at other colleges are first examined by the
Registrar's office for approval for UMBC credit. Only courses
that have been approved for UMBC credit can be considered
by your anthropology advisor for credit towards the major.
Approval of a sociology or anthropology courses taken elsewhere
for UMBC credit by the registrar does not automatically
give it credit towards the major or minor in anthropology.
Each student must personally discuss courses taken at other
college with his or her anthropology advisor to be sure
that the courses will receive credit towards the anthropology
major or minor at UMBC. If there is any ambiguity, ask your
advisor for a written statement about the courses.
If you plan to take a sociology or anthropology course at
another college after you have enrolled at UMBC, discuss
it with your advisor to make sure in advance that it will
receive credit towards the major. Never take the equivalent
of SOCY 300, ANTH 303 or ANTH 400 at another college without
your advisor's prior approval.
Other sociology and anthropology courses
at other colleges will also be given credit towards the
major at UMBC. Courses in social service, social work, criminal
justice, or religion are not sociology or anthropology courses
and will not be given credit. Students must take ANTH 211 Cultural Anthropology at UMBC. Credit for a lower level social sciences of culture general education requirement will be granted for a transferred Cultural Anthropology course, and will count as a lower level elective toward an ANTH or SOCY degree, but will not replace the requirement for ANTH 211 at UMBC.
