MINOR IN SOCIOLOGY

The sociology minor consists of SOCY 101 and 15 additional credits of sociology or anthropology courses of the student's choice. Six or more of the credits must be at the 300 or 400 level.

All regulations that apply to the major program apply to the minor program, including the minimum course grade requirement of C and requirements concerning courses transferred from other colleges. In order to receive credit for a minor, students must take at least nine credits in sociology or anthropology at UMBC.

Majors in anthropology may count towards the sociology minor two sociology courses (6 credits) that are taken as part of their major. They will therefore need four additional sociology courses (12 credits) to complete the minor.

The minor is also offered at the Shady Grove Center.

Sociology Minor for Social Work Majors

All Social Work majors are required to complete a minor. If social work majors select sociology as their minor, three courses will count for both social work and sociology. SOCY 101, which is required of all social work majors, will count towards the minor. SOCY 300 and SOCY 301 will count both as the method and statistics courses required of all social work majors and towards the sociology minor. Students therefore need only three other sociology or anthropology courses to complete the sociology minor. The following rules apply: SOWK 388 does not count towards the minor; 9 credits of courses towards the minor must be completed at UMBC; six of the credits must be at the 300 or 400 level; and a grade of C or better is required for a course to count towards the sociology minor.
