NON PROFIT SECTOR GRADUATE CERTIFICATE

The Department of Sociology offers a 12-credit graduate certificate program approved by the Maryland Higher Education Commission that is designed for students and professionals interested in non-profit organizations that deal with health, aging, social services, and related fields. This program is offered in partnership with the Maryland Association of Nonprofit Organizations ("Maryland Nonprofits").

Program Features

  • Students may begin the program at any time during the year
  • Complete the post-baccalaureate certificate in as little as eighteen months
  • All credits applicable towards a Master of Arts in Applied Sociology, if admitted to the MA program
  • Flexible admissions options; GREs not required
  • Bachelor's degree required, field optional
  • Some courses offered at UMBC, others at the Baltimore Office of the Maryland Association of Nonprofit Organization
  • Social and human-services oriented curriculum

Admission

Applicants are required to have a B.A. from a regionally accredited college or university or an equivalent degree from a comparative foreign institution. All applicants are expected to read, speak, write and understand the English language fluently upon entering the program.

Tuition and fees

Course Requirements

Students are required to take one course in each of the following four areas:
  1. Nonprofit Institutions in American Society:

    SOCY 681  Nonprofit Institutions in American Society (3 credits)

  2. Research Methods for Nonprofit Institutions (one of the following):

    SOCY 600  Research Methodology (3 credits)
    SOCY 604  Statistical Analysis (3 credits)
    SOCY 619 Qualitative Methods in Social Research (3 credits)


  3. SOCY 682  Research Methods for Non-Profit Institutions (3 credits)
  4. Nonprofit Sectors in American Society (one of the following):

    SOCY 614  The Evaluation of Educational Policy (3 credits)
    SOCY 620  Social Epidemiology (3 credits)
    SOCY 630  Sociology of Aging (3 credits)
    SOCY 631  Family and Aging in Society (3 credits)
    SOCY 632  Work and Retirement (3 credits)
    SOCY 651  Sociology of Health and Illness Behavior (3 credits)
    SOCY 652  Health Care Organization and Delivery (3 credits)
    SOCY 655  Sociology of Disability and Rehabilitation (3 credits)
    SOCY 658  Sociology of Mental Health and Illness (3 credits)

  5. Internal Structures and External Relations of Nonprofit Organizations (one of the following):

    SOCY 683  The Organization Structure of Nonprofit Organization (3 credits)
    SOCY 684  Nonprofit Organizations and Other Social Institutions (3 credits)
