MEET THE SCHOLARS  
Sondheim Public Affairs Scholars are among the most active students at UMBC. An essential quality of each Scholar is an interest in community service and Scholars typically seek out new opportunities to serve at UMBC and in the Greater Baltimore Community. Scholars willingly seek leadership roles in campus-affiliated organizations while maintaining their commitment to academics and interest in new experiences.

Josh Michael

Junior, Political Science and Secondary Teaching Certification
Goal: Teach middle school social studies, education administration in Baltimore City.

Josh's interest in education policy led him to a student position on Maryland's State Board of Education, and he continues to volunteer in Baltimore City schools. He has interned with the Maryland Department of Education, working on the state's High School Assessments, served as the UMBC representative to the USM Student Council and as a student commissioner on the Maryland Higher Education Commission. Currently, Josh has been nominated by Governor Martin O'Malley and confirmed by the Maryland Senate to be the University System of Maryland's student regent, a tremendous honor. Josh is impassioned to make a positive impact on the education system in Maryland.
   

Theresa Bruce

Senior, Political Science and Social Work
Goal: improve legal and social policies impacting Baltimore City youth

A graduate of Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, Theresa wants to make real change for Baltimore City's youth. By studying public administration and policy, interning with the Governor's Office for Community Initiatives, researching regulations for foster care, and volunteering with Baltimore's Juvenile Justice Center and Choice Tutoring Program, Theresa has developed her understanding of the personal, legal, and political forces at work on Maryland's children. Theresa spent her summer at the University of California, Berkeley's Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Fellowship.

   

Ari Ne'eman


Junior, History and Political Science
Goal: law, disability and education policy advocacy

In 2006, Ari founded the Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN), an organization of adults on the autism spectrum involved in public policy, autistic culture and social activities. Ari also serves on the youth advisory council of the National Council on Disability (NCD) and on the Program Advisory Board to the New Jersey Coalition on Inclusive Education. Ari's activism was recently featured on NPR and in the New York Magazine.
   
Shannon Polvi


Senior, Legal, Historical, and and Environmental Studies through the Interdisciplinary Studies Program
Goal: law, activism for the preservation of the environment

Shannon spent a semester abroad at James Cook University in Australia, pursuing environmental science and policy courses. While there, Shannon served as conservation volunteer at the Paluma Range National Park, trapping Mahogany Gliders in order to monitor their movements. "On my final day of volunteering we finally had a mahogany glider. I was even able to touch it, a really rare endangered species that few people on Earth have seen. It was surreal, plus it reaffirmed the work we had done was worth the effort." Read more...
