This past weekend, the UMBC Ice Hockey team traveled to the Ice Zone in Boardman, Ohio for the ACHA Men's Division 2 Ohio Showcase. This was the 2nd straight weekend the Ice Zone hosted an ACHA showcase fielding teams from the midwest, east coast and the south. Twenty ACHA Division 2 teams played 30 games over three days on two sheets of ice for complete hockey action. All the games were advertised live at www.FASThockey.com, the ACHA's broadcast partner.
The Retrievers set off on their journey late Thursday evening, spending the night preparing for their first matchup against Wisconsin on Friday morning at 10am. UMBC was able to pull out a victory in overtime, defeating Wisconsin 4-3.
The Retrievers spent the reminder of Friday resting both physically and mentally, while gearing up for their Saturday game against Florida Gulf Coast University. A resounding 7-3 victory over FGCU echoed throughout the Ice Zone on Saturday evening.
Rounding out the weekend, UMBC's last game came on Sunday morning against the Ohio State at 8:30am. With ease, the Retrievers shut out Ohio State with an ending score of 5-0.
The UMBC Retrievers returned home on Sunday evening with an overwhelming sense of accomplishment having gone 3-0 in the Ohio Showcase. They hope to carry over their success to their upcoming weekend games at the LeHaye Ice Rink in Lynchburg, VA. From October 23rd-25th, the UMBC Retrievers must gear up for another 3 games against Liberty (MI), Liberty (MII) and Kennesaw State.
