The Cantori Reception took place over homecoming weekend in memory of Louis Cantori, the late faculty adviser of the Crew Club. During the Cantori Reception, the Recreation department and many of the Cantori family members recognized the past year's Sport Club Athlete of the Year. During halftime of the homecoming Soccer game the award was presented to Caleb Gilmer, a Men's rugby player, who has excelled in academics and athletics.
Caleb Gilmer is a native of Orlando, Florida, the fifth child of missionary parents, Charles and Rebecca Gilmer, and has five other siblings. Caleb graduated from the International Baccalaureate Program at Winter Park High School in Winter Park Florida where he lettered in Wresting, was in the school orchestra, concert band, and jazz band, was in the National Honors Society, and named an AP Scholar by the National College Board as well as a National Achievement Scholar finalist. Here at UMBC he is a Sophomore in the Meyerhoff Scholars Program with a 3.7 GPA. Caleb has been playing rugby since his senior year of high school and worked his way to starting on the A-side rugby team here at UMBC by the spring of his freshman year. Since then he has been a strong asset to the team, working as an integral leader and star player on the rugby pitch. Congratulations Caleb!
Fresh off of the men's rugby recognition at the homecoming soccer game, the team faced off against John Hopkins University on Saturday, October 16th. Within minutes the tone was set, with UMBC jumping to a big lead in the first half. With unstoppable offense, the Retrievers pulled away with a 40 point victory over JHU. With only 3 games left in the season, Men's Rugby plans to finish strong. Go RETRIEVERS!
