The Sports Club Council of UMBC (SCC) is a governing club dedicated to the advancement of sport- and competition- oriented clubs at UMBC. The SCC has been in place for about 8 years, and now oversees 25 different club sports, each a voluntary member of SCC.

The SCC is in place to act as both a liason between the individual clubs and the Student Government Association, and an individual entity, to promote club level sports at UMBC, through the Office of RecSports, under the rules of the National Intramural, Recreation Sports Administration, but primarily to provide an ongoing discussion and analysis of rules and policies that affect clubs nationwide.

The SCC is made up of at least one representative from each affiliated sport club. Meetings are bi-weekly, and announced on the Calendar of Events. At each meeting, upcoming events, pertinent concerns, fund-raising opitons and policy issues are discussed among the representatives of the sports clubs, executive board and advisor of the SCC.

With the variety of sports affiliated with the Sports Club Council, the campus community is presented with not only opportunities for recreation, instruction, and competition in more than 20 different sports, but also an alternative to physical education, intramural and varsity competition.

The level of competition varies from club to club; Some Sport Clubs compete on a national level, practicing 3-5 times a week, while others offer a more relaxed setting practicing only once or twice per week.

UMBC's Broadwater wins national collegiate wrestling title

UMBC's Alex Broadwater (149 pounds) won the National Collegiate Wrestling Association tournament Saturday in Lakeland, Fla., becoming the first wrestler from the University of Maryland-Baltimore County to win a national championship.

Broadwater, a graduate of nearby Catonsville High School where he was a Baltimore County champion and a state placewinner, scored a 7-5 overtime victory over Clay Goodloe of Newman University in Kansas for the championship.

A junior and defending NCWA All-American, Broadwater went 5-0 at the three-day event, scoring two decisions and two pins before his finals bout. The wins improved his record to 23-4 on the season.

With the title, Broadwater joined Steve Kessler, Derrick Asbell and JJ Holmes as college national champions produced out of the Owings Mills Junior League program coached by hall-of-famer Guy Pritzker.

UMBC finished 13th at the event, the highest finish in school history, thanks to individual victories and pins by Jason Lanciotti (174 pounds / Mt. St. Joe), John Lapoint (235 / Glenelg) and Billy Hesch (285 / Seneca Valley).

In addition to Broadwater, three other Maryland natives from other schools earned All-American honors at the nationals.

Navy Prep's Luke Rebertus (174 / McDonogh / Caravel Academy), a three-time high school state champion, was named the event's Outstanding Wrestler, winning his title in dominant fashion. His teammate, Navy Preps' Collin Leadbeter (149 / Northern-Cal), a two-time high school state champ, finished third, losing only to Goodloe 8-5 in the semi-finals. Blair Academy's Andy Lowy (141 / Sherwood), a three-time high school state champion, placed seventh.

The NCWA national tournament is growing quickly in strength and prestige with approximately 150 teams from across the country hoping to produce individual national champs. This year, for example, an NAIA collegiate national champion placed seventh at the NCWA nationals.
