Special Sessions Faculty Rank & Salary

All special sessions faculty, those instructors teaching a summer or winter session department offered course, are paid according to the OSWSP's faculty salary scale based on rank and course credits. Your rank is listed as your "Functional Title" on your faculty contract.

Functional Title

Functional titles or ranks for faculty appointments are based on standard university guidelines. The functional title rank for current UMBC faculty teaching a special sessions course is based on the rank in effect during the previous academic semester (i.e., summer session rank is the same as the spring semester rank and winter session rank is the same as the fall semester rank).

If a faculty member's rank changes, the academic department chair must submit a letter to the Office of Summer and Winter Programs verifying the official change in rank.

Ranks used for special sessions appointments are:

  • Instructor
  • Assistant Professor / Lecturer
  • Associate Professor / Senior Lecturer
  • Professor

Full-Time UMBC Faculty
Full-time UMBC faculty teaching a summer or winter session course are hired at their approved UMBC faculty rank determined by the provost's office.

Adjunct Faculty

Adjunct faculty are typically hired at the instructor level.  Faculty appointments above the instructor level require a letter of authorization and supporting documentation from the department chair or program director.
