Special Sessions Faculty Compensation

Salary Scale

All special sessions faculty teaching a summer or winter course are paid according to the OSWSP's faculty salary scale approved by the provost's office each fiscal year.  Below are the approved faculty salaries for summer session 2011 and winter session 2012.

Faculty Salary Ranks for Fiscal Year 2012 (Summer 2011 and Winter 2012)

Full-time faculty (those employed at least nine months per year) are compensated in the regular UMBC bi-weekly paycheck. Pay dates are specified in the appointment contract.

Part-time faculty (those who do not receive a UMBC bi-weekly paycheck) are paid on the date specified in the appointment contract.  Paychecks are mailed to the home address.  On request, paychecks can be delivered directly to the academic departments for pickup.

Special Sessions faculty are compensated on a "one-pay" system based on the session:

  • Faculty teaching four or six week courses receive their teaching salary in one lump sum payment on the pay date specified on the appointment contract.

  • Faculty teaching eight or twelve week summer courses are paid twice - 50% of the salary half-way through the session and the remaining 50% at the end of the session on the pay dates specified on the appointment contract.

  • Payments in excess of $9999 cannot be processed on the same pay date and will be split between two pay dates specified on the appointment contract.

Special Sessions (summer/winter) appointments are not considered part of the regular academic course teaching load.

The total amount of extra compensation earned at UMBC by faculty on a full-time, nine month academic year appointment cannot exceed 33.3% of his/her academic year salary. The time period for calculating annual compensation is from August 23 to August 22 of the following year.

If a faculty member cannot receive direct compensation because of this income limit, the corresponding salary rate may be transferred to the academic department and utilized for conferences, supplies, travel, and other instructional or research purposes at the discretion of the department.

See the Faculty Handbook, Section Four (Recruitment and Appointment of Faculty) and Section Five (Offers of Appointment and Appointment Agreement) or contact the Office of Summer and Winter Programs for more information.
