Course PlanningTo help in planning the upcoming winter session, course information and enrollment data for past winter sessions are available below. Note: Departments are listed alphabetically, you may need to "scroll through" the list to find your department listing. Most students who attend winter session are UMBC juniors and seniors. They typically look for courses that meet GEP/GFR requirements, fulfill upper level graduation requirements or meet requirements for their major. Please keep this in mind when planning the winter schedule. Schedule Building in SAWinter Schedule Building Dates & Deadlines
Changes / Edits to the Winter Schedule If you find it necessary to make changes to the winter schedule after the September 9th deadline, please notify the Office of Summer, Winter & Special Programs by submitting an RT Ticket. Select "Schedule" and include "Winter Session Schedule Change" in the subject line of your ticket. Changes to the schedule – particularly those involving instructors – require our office’s involvement to ensure accuracy of information, room scheduling, and contracting. Training for Scheduling Coordinators Training for scheduling coordinators – including fundamentals & advanced as well as refresher training and “best practices” sessions, will be scheduled during the upcoming weeks. For details, go to www.umbc.edu/training.
Course Scheduling Guidelines Winter Session 2012 begins on Tuesday, January 3 and runs through Wednesday, January 25. There are 16 weekdays available for this winter session. Holiday Schedule UMBC is closed on Monday, January 2 and on Monday, January 16, 2012. Classes meeting on Mondays that do not meet the minimum contact hour requirements - due to the holidays - should schedule a make-up day. Make-up dates are determined by the instructor. Contact Hour Requirements For every credit, a non-lab course must meet for 12.5 hours. 1.5 and 2 Credit Courses -- schedule 2 days/week (25 hours of contact time) 3 Credit Courses -- schedule 4 days/week (37.5 hours of contact time) 4 Credit Courses –schedule 5 days/week (50 hours of contact time) Standard Class Meeting Times 9:00 am – 12:10 pm To meet contact hour requirements, a three credit course must meet a total of 12 times for 3 hours and 10 minutes (37.5 total contact hours). To reach 37.5 contact hours, three credit courses need to be scheduled for four days a week during this particular winter session. Depending on the meeting days selected, however, the four day a week meeting pattern may result in 13 (or 14) total class meetings – one (or two) “over” the required number. Faculty will therefore have some flexibility regarding how to best use this “extra” day(s). The 13th (and/or 14th) day can be reserved as an emergency make up day if the campus must close due to inclement weather, (instead of rescheduling on the following Saturday) or if a class meeting must be canceled for any other reason. It is also likely that the January 2 and January 16 holidays will not need to be “made up” for classes meeting on Mondays. Please check the total number of days you’ve selected, and plan your schedule accordingly. Note: The scheduling notes above do NOT apply to hybrid courses. Since the hybrid course format is a combination of in class and online, It is the instructor’s responsibility to select the desired meeting dates and class schedules.
